Trailer: James vs Reality

I've finally finished my first live action film, James vs Reality (very exciting for me!) The whole journey making the films humbling but exciting and I certainly learned a lot.

I'm the writer, director, editor, did all the color correction, sound, music, as well as doing most all of the visual effects. This was my first time doing visual effects in a film. We did the film on a $0 budget!

Here's a quick trailer I put together for finishing the film:

I hope everyone will enjoy the film. We packed in a lot of crazy fun (and laughs) into it!

Wow. Great work, Chris.

How long was the post production process?

And how was the reaction at the Bagdad?

The post production took me about a year. I did pretty much everything (along with Malcolm, the creature modeller) with the films post; editing, color correction, visual effects, sound, music, ect. It was my first time doing visual effects (and my first live action film), so it was always very challenging, but I'm very happy with how it all turned out!

The reaction was great at the Bagdad. From what we're hearing, it may have been the biggest premiere for a local indie film in Portland (almost 550 people showed up), everyone was really jazzed about the film, had amazing feedback afterwards, ect. Was a great night, blew away any expectations that I'd had.

It looks very good.

Also very nice (in a way like...not easy to get) locations. (like the airport, airplane...)

The monster misses a tooth I think....

Good to hear. This is really inspirational.

Good luck with distribution prospects (have you any?).

And thanks for sharing the SFX video.

I'm not sure there's a lot of opportunities for short film distribution, so we're just hitting the festivals hoping to grab some attention and exposure to help the next project along.

Thank you so much for the nice words!

I think she has a few too many teeth personally! We got very lucky with locations, people were very generous to us. The movie is a $0 budget, we got away with a lot more than we should have.

I checked out the trailer and thought it was pretty good. I don;t know if it was vimeo or not but some of the cuts and "bombs" from the sound effects to suggest the transition came too soon or late. But overall I liked it.

I did feel though the main actor wasn't that great in the little bit I saw...something about his voice...sounded like someone to act tougher than they really are. But maybe it is better in the release. SE looked great when that explosion hit the clock tower.

Good luck to you on the release...that happened last month :)

I appreciate CGI but i dont like the shutter speed and motion of the footage, looks like shutter 1/30 or 30fps.

I'm sure that was an issue with Vimeo with the sound being off. I'm pretty anal about stuff like that! =)

The main character sounding tougher than he is is the whole point of the character. He's a pudgy pear-shaped mental patient who's out of his mind and even more out of shape, who believes he is a super hero. He's not though. He's just fat and delusional!

Unfortunately, a limitation of our crappy equipment. I contemplated a post conversion, but ended up not worrying about it. Things will be better on my 2nd film (already have a less craptacular camera!)

I noticed there is a hoe to dvd on how you made you film
could you tell us more about that?
http://www.wellfixitinpost.com/dvd.html

I made a two hour long documentary that covers the weird-ass shooting of this film. All of the hardships of a first time filmmaker trying to figure everything out, dealing with a nazi cameraman and trying to make an epic disaster film with literally no money. It's a funny and fast moving look at all the weird crap that we did making the film and how much we (hopefully) grew as filmmakers during the process. It's a pretty ambitious project for a first time filmmaker (huge monsters, two plane crashes, building collapses and all kinds of other crazy crap) and it didn't go well for a long time, but throughout the process (and as seen in the documentary), we slowly began to get it and grow as filmmakers.

There's also FX documentaries and a ton of other crazy crap on the 4 hours of content on the DVD. And it comes with a scratch n sniff card, for the full smell-o-rama experience!
