Trailer from a new DVX feature now available

Hi. I stumbled upon this thread and just had to join in. I'm the director of "Freaky Faron." Just wanted to address a couple points.

I edited this trailer a few days before I left Tulsa in August. It's not the final trailer. We intentionally chose to show a lot of the movie because we're using the trailer for fundraising, generating interest for post-production, and basically rewarding the cast and production crew. The final theatrical trailer will be cut way down. And we won't use copyrighted music either.

We used a lot of different mics for the project. Sometimes we used LAV mics and a Sennheiser at the same time, recorded onto two seperate tracks so we could pick and choose later. On some of the wide shots and scenes with a lot of background noise, we used two LAV mics on seperate tracks.

This was an ultra-low-budget film. We didn't actually rent a 3-ton truck from LA. All our equipment, except for sound, was provided by Bulldog Productions in Tulsa.

My DP, Kelly Richard, was an AC on "November" which was also shot on the DVX and won best Cinematography at Sundance, I believe. So we basically used all the same settings that they used and we're following basically the same post-production path. We're in the editing stage right now.

Lighting the night exteriors was extremely difficult. Some shots turned out better than others, but given our budget we were very happy with what we were able to pull off. Also, on that trailer, I added some brightness to certain night shots on Final Cut. But I didn't add any brightness to the shots on the DVD that I burned, and it looks fantastic if you watch it on a large monitor.

That's all. I hope y'all don't mind me butting in. Thanks.

khmuse and freakyfaron,

I think this promo works as a trailer up until the little kids ask Faron for help. At that point you should be able to cut up the whole rest of the trailer to keep it moving without having to show all the storylines that are going on in the movie. Also should be able to come up with a better sound when she hits the one guy with a baseball bat.

Looks like you have some good young talent there. I liked the brick throw shot. And the push into the car window right after it! The movie looks good, I would be interested in seeing it.

FreakyFaron, come back to the website more often, keep us updated and thanks for sharing!

I think it looks good! Don't listen to all the grumpy, holier than thou "artistes" around here. Looks cool. My 13 year old daughter would love it.

I liked it even with the excess length. The lighting for night was nice; low contrast is tough. This is one of the few trailers I've been able to sit through.

I thought it was good, a little lengthy but for what you are using it for, looks good. There was some talanted young actors in that. The blacks were not black enough in some scenes, but you did say that you had to boost them for the internet version. I could have watched it even if it was longer. Well I'm a DVX footage hound, what can I say.

This looks really good; really solid. (This young lady is the daughter of one of our members I believe; anyone remember the bedroom scene with the two young girls choosing a class schedule?)

Anway; one of the more solid efforst i have seen in awhile and the sound is epic. Super pro sounding. That dolly shot at about 00:01:28 is awesome. Super cool.

An Directed by John Ross? Man thats my name.

Hey John, great memory, that was my daughter from the scene that we were working on last summer! With almost 12,000 posts, I am amazed that you could recall it.

Thanks for the comments on the project too!

OMG! LOL

Too funny. I totally remember becasue everyone contributed to that thread in a positive fashion! Good to see her working!

Whatever happended to that short?

Yeah, that was one of my first experiences on this board and everyone was really helpful with their suggestions. She (my daughter) is actually working nearly all the time now, usually 2 to 3 projects every month. With all the work and auditions, we get a lot of quality time together in the car (about 60k LA traffic miles a year average)!

Actually, that wasn't a short (though the running time was only 20 minutes) but a feature development project (a part of a feature that accompanies the treatment/script); the script is still being shopped around, you never can tell, it can take years to get something sold.

OMG 60K LA Miles? OMG. I used to commute from San Diego to San Pedro 5 days a week.

Brutal.

I can't imagine writing a script these days trying to pursue directing or atleast learning the art of directing, which at this level means learnign how to be a DP, and an Editor............

I need someone who can write my ideas for me.

Damn it.

I actually remember this one also...Wasn't one of them doing homework...and in another scene there was a wierd lense flare on the girls face....For some reason I remember that. Is that the same movie?

Hello Slimothy,

You too have an uncanny recollection ability! Your absolutely correct, that is the same project.

If you want to see how the scene finished out, there is a link at:

http://www.courtneyhalverson.com

Go to the "films" page and then click on the film video tape. On the page that opens up this project is titled "Canvas Life" and is located in the lower right corner of that page. The link is to a .wmv and it runs about 1:55.

I would be interested to learn your impressions of that scene. I produced and edited Canvas Life as a feature development project (hired the rest of the cast and crew from industry people that we have worked with over the years). The screen play was written by my daughter (also played the character of Alice, the one trying to choose a class in that scene) and is currently being shopped by her literary agency. This was her first attempt at a feature length screen play (she was 14 when she wrote that one) and is currently finishing another.

Cute portfolio-style website. I thought the "Canvas Life" scene played out very realistic and no awkwardness at all. You have yourself one very talented little lady there! Best of luck to her!

"Freaky Faron" is available online as part of the Cinequest Vuze Audience Favorites Competition. If you can find time to watch the film and give it a good rating, I'd really appreciate it.

Just go this link: http://www.vuze.com/details/W7ZNUBMPRRIJ57VJB5QHCAZ3VIAK2Q7A.html

The site is a bit involved and the system requirements are rather demanding, but all you need to do is download the Vuze Client (Azureus) on your computer to watch and rate the film.

Also you can check out the trailer for the film at one of these links:
