trailer for short

me and 2 friends attend an audiovisual school and we made 30min short as our final project. here's a trailer for it, as far as trailers go it's not that good, but we got kind of tired with editing the movie itself that we didn't have much energy left for the trailer :D

shot with dvx100a. we borrowed a senheiser shotgun mic & 2 redheads from our school. we didn't have any budget but spend some of our own money to buy food, dv tapes etc

most of these grabs look great to me. I love that darkish look.

I can't see the trailer as my jobs proxy blocks the site but i'll see it when i get home.

Wow man, those grabs enticed me so I checked out the trailer, looks like a cool story and I'd love to see the full film once it's ready. Some of the shots in the trailer look terrific, the music composed is really good too.

Great work :)

I would be interested in knowing how you guys came up with this film? Any inspirations? How did it come about?

give us a little synopsis of the story. The shots look good and the trailer is somewhat gripping but really open ended. I'd like a little more plot exposure to get a better feel of the movie's environment... ie, to see if the shots capture the mood, ect.

good work tho, i love the blown out window grab...really soft contrast, feathered. looks hot. is the finished product gonna be posted/available?

Verry niice looking!! The story sounds interesting...can u give us a summary of it? or maybe post the movie when its done? I'd really like to see it.

Coltrain: We were on internship when we got an email from school that told us we needed to have a first version of the script in about 2 weeks or so. Our internship was pretty crappy so we didn't mind spending time on the script. My friend came up with the story and from there we started writing it. There's a part in the story where the main character gets calls for a suicide hotline cause of a miss printed add. I got that from a Chuck Palahniuk novel (survivor), so that was an inspiration.

coffee: We used the basic settings, we didn't have time to adjust the settings for each shot, we ran out of time as it was :D. We just used the lighting and some filters on the light. We also did a lot of guerrilla filming where we didn't have any lights but it turned out ok. except for some shots that are too dark.

; it's about a writer with a troubled mind who's going trough strange events in his hotelroom, and slowly he's discovering what going. but i can't say much more cause it's got a twist off course. it's that kind of film :p. but there's other characters like the agent who's pressing him for the finished book. also a tv preacher that starts talking to him trough the tv

and we are definitely gonna try and make a version available for internet but it'll take some time.

Cheesesailor77; yeah i saw the results of MB here on the forum and thought it would be nice to check out, maybe i would look more like we had a budget ;D. and we did use it.
we started out by using a preset and then changing it to fit our needs.

thx for all the replies

I noticed you used two pieces from the score of 28days later, is that just a temp track or are going to keep it, just wodering. Good job with the trailer, I can't wait to see the whole short.

Did you use the Redheads for the opening visuals(natural light) in the trailer of the lead in the bedroom? Was that just sunlight? I really like the look of your piece and would really be interested to hear a little more about your lighting setups.

yeah it's from the soundtrack. it's one song but cut in 2. we're gonna keep it for the trailer.
we used more film music in our short. next time i'll use library music. but to actually licence it here is really really expensive. if we would show our film at a theatre and we want to licence the music it would cost about 36.000 euros that's 42,904.8 $

we used a couple of locations. the hotel room; other friend of mine who is the third person who worked on this project had an internship with a local tv broadcaster and they reside inside a hotel. it's weird but we finnaly got to use a room there, but we weren't allowed to film in the rest of the hotel. but we did anyways. we also used the elevator, stairs & lobby.
and we used another office-like room for the agent

another location was a church in my hometown. during the week the bulding that's attached to the chucrch is used for various activities. one being a bridge night my father attends. so i got that location trough my father.

we have a subway scene, we just went in the metro when there weren't many people using it. and we wanted it to look like he was alone there so we just stopped people and asked if they could sit somewhere else or if they could wait :D

there's a diner location in it, a friend of my sister co-owns a diner so we filmed there one night. we didn't have much time or additional lighting so we had some trouble there.

then there's outdoor locations in "rotterdam" a city in holland. we filmed there while it was snowing (didn't plan on it but it looked cool anyways). we also shot at night outdoors and we just tried to look for places that had strong lighting.
---------

opening shot is only natural lighting if i remember correctly. when he's at the telephone we did use the redheads. same for when he's in bed (we also zapped the tv so you could really see the flickering of the tv in his face.) bathroom we used one redhead and faced it toward the corner to let it bounce.

we were in an audiovisual school (just graduated) but it's really nothing special we didn't learn much about lighting. so we used the trial & error way, someone would look at the viewfinder and the other would adjust the light until it would look good enough. other than that we used a lot of bouncing on white walls and home-made bounce screens instead of directly lighting the subject.

i actually don't remember anymore we wanted to use "bronze" or "gold crunch" at first but i think we used a modified version of "no58"

Wesley,

Your screen grabs look so sharp & clear. How did you shoot this? Stretch 16x9, Cropped in Post? or w/anamorphic adapter?

Just want to say you did a great job. Love the look and framing. Great angles. I really like your control of light style.

Sorry, had to edit: I loved Palahniuk's Survivor, nice reference!
