trailer for my new film

Re: trailer for my new film

Good first try, keep plugging away, you'll get the hang of it eventually :D

Re: trailer for my new film

That guy was like: "I hate having my jacket in my car. I'll just take it out and throw it away.

You get props because Napoleon Dynamite was in the shot.

Aren't these guys relentlessly anal?? It'll help you out though. Also, the ticket taker's expression was totally "I'm pretending not to act like I'm acting in this dv movie. Also, take advantage of the closeups. Also, edit to the music. It'll work. Try some slo-mo.

And i guess last but not least (only because I've been obsessed with this lately) DON'T be afraid of low light. Movie theaters ARE dark. No problem.

PEACE! Keep it up.

LOL! hilarious Hill...

I agree with everyone on this board for everything they said.. except if I may ask, did you people point out his shakiness because it didn't seem approriate for the shots he chose or because it was shaky period?
I can see that michael did mix styles... I could have easily seen this with all shaky.. since the characters motivation was to hide something(food),that can be a motivation for having shakey shots.

yea, that jacket thing was a little weird for me too... except maybe I can see why it's funny... but then it's really not funny if he's not wearing it in the next shot.
I liked the long shot of the character coming to the movie theatre. That was very filmy. AND shaky style works with long shots like that. think Friday Night Lights, any given sunday, movies like that. I love the look too.
overall, you're shooting. and that matters most. I know some people who do nothing... and they have a dvx. and when they aren't doing anything, THEY DONT DESERVE THE DVX!!!!!!!!

why you trying to start huh? Just cause you in a gang dosen't make you special. Dvpixelated always trying to start shiat! ;D

Re: trailer for my new film

Good choice in music.

Ya, as some of the cats here have said. There is something about it that keeps me there, the overexposure doesn't bug me too much, I think it works for what you're doing. Its supposed to be sad, its supposed to be bleak. I GET IT.

It's just a tad Too melodramatic.

um...yeah, you know. I'm a fan of good handheld. I'm not saying your handheld was bad...It's just that, it wasn't done that well. ::)

You can shape this thing up. Just hit it hard and plot your shots.

one last thing, I dont know if it was mentioned already but you might want to kill the sound once he's walking to the theater. The background sound doesnt work too well with the music. Pay more attention to the sound design it could help me into the character's world.

Gallo is okay...But he shouldn't be anyones inspiration. Pretentous bastard

Peace,
Steve

Re: trailer for my new film

I liked the approach you gave, handheld/availiable light. You exposed for your actors face all the time, and just let whatever had to blow out. I was very intrigued, until I saw the ticket seller. You should get some older actors, that was really disturbing. I think the editing is great and I couldn't care less that the heads were cut off in the middle of some movements. I liked the look, and people here should understand that it's just a different approach. Nothing to be sorry for. Yes, you could try and fake the car scene a little with foamcore just to attenuate the overexposing effect, or if you want to spend some money, you could rig the whole outside of the car with the ND Gel of your choice, too (Leave the side that doesn't appear to the camera clear, so there comes enough light in through that, and use the foamcore from that side), but honestly, do it only if you feel you need. It was well done and I can tell everything you did really seemed like a contious choice, so if you'd rather, stick with it. You don't have to fear overexposure, it's just white, anyway.

And don't put any warming filters, man, this is looking good. Either stick with the availiable light look or do the fancy stuff right. Filters over some irregular footage won't help much. Besides, the coolness of the images really did go well with the music, and the overall mood... (I'd lower the brightness a little bit on the theather, you should've used the DVX, you didn't need all that light) but overall, you might have something really nice for a change...

Re: trailer for my new film

OK, here’s the story as I am interpreting it.

Dude is waiting in his car to meet his date for the movie, she finally arrives and he gets out to see her. “She tells him I’m Cold.” So he has to go back to get his jacket for her.

Next thing, Tex, the locale ladies man drives up in his metallic blue 1975 Cadillac Eldorado, so the girl dumps our hero and jumps in the car, stealing his jacket in the process. (all of which will be revealed later in flashbacks)

Alone now, our protagonist decides to watch the movie anyway, but now he is alone, so alone, with only his illicit pack of nutter butters to keep him company.

All of this is observed POV through the eyes of a ninja with Hodgkin’s disease.

Seriously though I think it has potential, the shaky camera isn’t really working for me either, though I don’t have a problem with it being handheld though, but its your film. And as others have said, shoot, shoot, shoot, then shoot some more.

I’ll be posting some of my clips pretty soon so you can dog on them too =)

"You should get some older actors, that was really disturbing."

haha we're all in the same grade. junior year high school.

Re: trailer for my new film

what is the age consensus here?

Bluespider, I respect you and your posts. nobody starting anything. i will now go back to being pixleated.

Re: trailer for my new film

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the "pole shot" around :54 where the actor's entire face and center of the body is covered by the pole.

thats my favorite shot in the opening sequence. if you don't like it, you have to get to know vincent gallo's stuff.

Re: trailer for my new film

Hello Michael-summers

Generally you are on the right track, nice change of angles here and there - since this is your opening scene, I am guessing you are trying to establish mood with it. However, DigitalAsylum makes some good points about killing the 'dead-time' - which is removing shots that are unecessary in the film's story. Some of it is ok if you are trying to establish mood, but a lot of it in this opening sequence can be cut out. But then again, this is your first edit, so no hurry.

keep it up

Re: trailer for my new film

is vincent gallo actor and filmmaker? what is his best know work? brown bunny?
i agree with referencing this artist and that artist.. but just because someone did something doesn't mean that it's the greatest thing in the world.
there are many innovations and tradition breaking stuff but those are always done with some tact and passion. don't just do it for the sake of doing it.

- just my stupid two cents.

for this project we had to emulate some type  of film, whether it be noir, heist etc. and i asked my teacher if i could replicate some of Gallo's techniques, and he said that could also be a catagory. [/quote]

Re: trailer for my new film

Yes, but in emulating a technique there has to be some follow through in the conditions that technique is emulated under.

For a gunfight or a chase scene I could understand a shaky camera, but not when somebody is sitting in a car, reading a book, silently. You need to question these things, and if the assignment was to emulate a shooting technique, then you simply write a story to compliment that for the assignment.

Re: trailer for my new film

I don't know too much about VGallo but have heard of and read reviews of some of his work (including the controversy).

Doesnt interest me; seems like pretentious ego tripping. Just my opinion.

If your trying to emulate his style which seems to be alot of handheld 'cinema verite'; dont try too hard. Just hand hold the camera and let it flow. Intentionally shaking or intentionally trying to create 'movement' looks really bad.

i tried to hold it as steady as i could but i knew since im such a damn unsteady hand it would come out real handheld... maybe ill build one of those cheap mans stabalizers this winter break to keep me busy.

Re: trailer for my new film
