Trailer for movie Canvas completly shot on DVX100A. Please critique

looks like the real deal, man, nice work

I like the end where the title is reavealed-- good way to do it-- the motion attracts your attention, and it's still very subtle

I liked the scenes with the kid and the mother, the rest of the dialogue falls a little
stiff, storyline unclear. I would definitely watch this if it were a coming of age story.
Nice final scene.

nice .... what plugin do you use for the yellow flashes? it seems that macgregor used this effect on some of his footage but i ve never found the explanation on this forum.

My editor Crazy Dave said "The Yellow flashes are made from stock footage I had. The original footage is that of a tail end of a burned tail or head on a film. I overlaid it over the video and the transitions are regular flash transitions."

God I can't stand the music... well not the music overall, just the drums in the song. WAAAAAY TOO MIDI! But still, stupendous trailer. Very well put together!

Definitely peeked my interest... seems like an interesting story, and it looks good too. The music just "fit". Only little criticism I'd have is the dialogue at the very beginning between the boy and his mom... seemed a little... awkward I think.

But overall you got the job done... the trailer made me interested to know more

I really appreciate all of the feedback from everyone. I'm very happy that so far it seems to be mostly positive with this being our first feature film project. Keep em coming.

Thanks,
Brent

Nice shots out by the water. I like it, but like many trailers these days, maybe it reveals a little too much of your story. You might want to consider an alternate cut that holds back some of the story so at the end the viewer is thinking, "Wow, what happens? I gotta see the movie and find out."

Loose the music

Loose the music

I thought the trailer was well put togethor. The music set to the trailer turned me off though. It sounded 80'ish. Some type of dramatic music set to it would be alot better. The editing and the shot comp and color were really well done. Its nice to see someone who actually knows what there doing. The story told in the trailer gave too much away. Lead me on a little more. Don't tell me about the character dying. Lead me to want to try and solve this persons problem. Other than the music. I definetly think you have a GREAT film on your hands. Keep up the good work.

God Bless!

i liked it and to say the trailer gave away too much. um every knew anakin was going to become darth vader yet still millions went to see it happen. ;)

music...not going to knock that. i'm a musician. sure i know canned drum when i hear it. hook them up with Acid Pro :)

finally my only techie insight...the bottom of the screen of the letterbox area was flickering. how did you shoot? anamorphic or letterbox?

Thank you everyone still for the comments. Ireally really appreciate the feedback. as far as that letter box jittering it's been a problem all the way through. I thought I had it licked until I used H264 to encode streaming. Maybe that did it. The raw dv dose'nt jitter. I'll keep working on it.

one thing you can do is try to make sure that your letterbox filter is applied last, i.e. at the bottom of your filters.

If that doesn't work and if you are on a mac - drag a slug from your video generators above your entire project then use the mask shape filter to cut a rectangle in the slug and make actuall letterbox above the video underneath -- you can go ahead and set the horizontal adjustment to 100 and then match the vertical adjustment to the letterbox underneath I forget what the number is for the vertical adjustment but this is the way I do it all the time. This way the filters are nly applied to your video underneath the slug letterbox. You will want to go ahead and remove the letterbox filter from the botton layer of video thugh because it can still jump up over the slug letterbox. THis should obly be a problem if you've done lots of offsetting (raising the image up and down within the letterbox filter). For this reason I always use a slug letterbox so that I don't have to reframe at the end when i realize that the letterbox is problematic with the other filters and I'm going to have to reframe using motion coordinates as opposed to the offset control in the letterbox feature.
