Back in October 2007, with $6000, a cast of 6, extras cast of 500+ and a crew of 15, we shot a sequel to my 2006 zombie film DEADLANDS: The Rising. One year laater we wrapped a weekend only production that shot on and off during the fall and spring months of 2007 and 2008.

The story follows 6 strangers trapped in a local movie theater cineplex the night the military unleashes a new bio-weapon on the residents on a small us city. This weapon turns the towns residents into blood crazed killers.

So I present the 2 minute plus teaser for Deadlands 2.

You can choose the Watch in HD option once on the You Tube page.

The film was shot with DVX100B's, but VEGAS does a nice job of doing HD renders. So enjoy.

Looks really kick ass! Im also about to do my feature I should have a bit more than 6k but the fact that you have that product with 6k is really awesome. Id like to see your budget if you dont mind showing sending it to me!

Great job keep it up,

Here is how the budget was broken down.

Most of the cast lived in Virginia or the Eastern Side of Maryland (Baltimore, Glen Burnie) so we shot in Hagerstown, MD at the Hagerstown 10 Cineplex. In lieu of pay for the actors I put them up in hotels every weekend we shot. I worked out a deal with the local hotels/motels for either $25.00-$50.00 a night per room or a flat rate of $250.00 for a block of rooms (10 rooms)

We started shooting on September 27th, and shot for 3 weekends in a row We had 7 rooms at $30.00 a night for one night (Saturday into Sunday)at the one Quality Inn so that was $210.00 x 3 weekends $630.00

$6000.00
-$630.00
=$5370.00 Left in Budget

Food for each weekend which consisted of a hot 3 course meal cost $100.00 for all the food for each weekend. So that was $300.00 (We made deals with local supermarkets and Wholesale clubs for food like Pasta, Sauce, and Groundbeef for Meatballs.

We broke for one weekend for scheduling

We then shot the next 3 weekends, staying at a hotel just above the PA state line who gave us $25.00 a night rates we had 10 rooms (Bigger crew that night) $250.00 x 3 = $750.00 + again $300.00 for food. total $1050.00

$5370.00
-$1050.00
=$4320.00 Left in Budget

Make up FX for those six weeks cost us approximately $1200.00 USD this was to dress and make up 520 zombie extras over that six weeks.

$4320 - $1200 = $3120 left in Budget

We bgroke for the Thanksgiving holiday and shot 2 weekends in December. This is where we paid our highest hotel rates of $50.00 a night. Those two weekends we needed 7 rooms each weekend so we spent another $700.00 in hotel rooms

$3120 - $700 = $2420.00

Now over the course of the 8 weekends we had generator equipment rental for the outdoor shots in the parking lot of the H10. Each weekend the 2 portable Generators cost us $100.00 per weekend

$2420.00 - $800 = $1620.00

We broke for the XMAS holiday and Winter break until March 13th weekend

Hotel stay $300.00, no generator rental, no make-up costs, food cost $100.00

$1220.00 left in the budget

April we shot two weekends one in Virginia (one Night only) and one in Hagerstown (One night only) The actors carpooled so I coughed up gas money, the crew carpooled I coughed up money. Spent about $150.00 is gas money for everyone.

$1070.00 Left in budget.

June 08, we did One Night with two actors on a deserted road just a few hours work, they carpooled $40.00 in gas

$1030.00 left in budget.

We went into post production, still waiting on final location which was the roadblock.

October 2008, 1 weekend Fredericksburg, VA, Hotel cost $200.00 for 4 rooms, $200 for massive 20K Generator, $400 in make-up supplies and food.

Left us $230.00 in the budget, shooting completed. I actually came in under budget and used the remaining $218.00 I had left over to buy 600 18x12 posters for the movie.

So as you an see that was the breakdown of a $6000.00 budget for that zombie film, DEADLANDS 2.

Wow thats awesome you were able to transport and keep your actors and crew comfortable, and shoot a film for 6k great job!

Keep it up,

Graham Robbins

This is a really impressive accomplishment. Good looking trailer also. When do we get to watch the full thing?

A mall again? really? Other then that great job. Especially for the Budget. Must have been brutal finding that many extras with a low budget.

Actually not a mall, it is 10 theater cineplex in Hagsertown, MD. Most of the shots are just the lobby of the theater taken from the balcony.

Getting extras wasn't that hard. I used Craigslist, promised IMDB and Screen Cred, plus we fed everyone a nice hot meal, played movies for free, and everyone wants to be a zombie at one time in their life or other.

We hope to get it out in the late summer or fall of 09. I am doing a re-edit from the original premiere cut to fix a pacing issue as the film goes from fast pacing to a dead stop at the 35 minute mark, then picks back up the last 15 minutes, so I am just trying to fix that 20 minute section to pace it better.

Thanks.

My feeling was Maryland didn't really have any horror type zombie films. I mean Redneck Zombies and Livelihood came from Maryland, but I felt it needed to be represented with a as serious as can be all balls out Zombie film.

Great Job! Trailer looks good. I really really think you should make it shorter. Maybe half as long. Just give people the highlights from that trailer.

Thanks Nik,

there is a shorter 1:05 version floating around on You Tube somewhere I made back in may 08 when we were still filming, but now that the final product is almost ready I felt a 2+ minute trailer needed to be out there.

Back in Oct 07 I put a 30 second promo trailer for the movie and used stuff from the first night of filming.

I am going to do one last trailer in the spring, maybe another 1 minute long one or something.

Nice trailer. I'm curious how much money your first film DEADLANDS: The Rising made through Netflix distro?

Netflix bought 688 copies of the film from my distributor at $6.00 per copy. So $4128.00 USD

They buy the discs straight out, you receive no royalties in the form of a percentage per rental.

Thanks. Yeah, i wanted to do something that wasn't based on the unknown. This was supposed to be a huge throwback to Demons and The Return of the Living Dead.

Dude you need to see this thread. http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=157390 if you haven't been. We've been talking about shooting this kind of film.

I watched your trailer by the way and you know what's scary - the zombie's run. I remember watching my friend play a new Res Evil game and being shocked that the zombie's ran. What the hell? Especially when they do the slow zombie walk, stop then just run. I never expect that.

My only complaint is that your main actor has a baseball cap on and that makes it hard to see his face and his eyes. I find this frustrating because I want to see the actor...act and emote. I would advise giving the actor that freedom next time.

Other than that it looks like you're on the right track. I've always wanted to make something like this but I keep getting more focused on other projects. Best of luck!
