Hey everyone,

Finally after over 2 years of work, we are ready to begin shooting "Townies".

I will use this thread like a blog, posting clips, rehearsal videos, answering and ask questions, and announcing news.

SYNOPSIS:
For years the Charlestown 'Code of Silence' has kept from the public eye the harsh secrets of one of America's most vicious neighborhoods in one of it's oldest Irish towns. But now, writer/director Mike O'Dea unveils a world only heard about in whispers, in local legend: the story of Mickey Callaghan, a one time Olympic hopeful in the ring, now a descendent on his way to the throne of the neighborhood. After his release from prison, a truce called down from high on Bunker Hill is broken, and Mickey's world rapidly ignites into a war against crime boss, Marty Flannagan, in one last stand for getting out and getting even.

Hey, best of luck to ye from the oul' sod!

If you need any background info from a native just let me know.

One piece of advice, just in case ... if there's going to be an Irish accent, try to keep the actor from a "faith and begorrah, to be sure, to be sure" lilt. It sounds corny. Reason being... Irish people love it when someone "abroad" makes a movie that references Ireland in any way, and want to see it, so you might want to consider distribution in some form here at a later stage. But the one thing that will screw your chances is a corny accent.

For a good example of a bad accent, check out Mr. Cruise himself in Far and Away. Not a great movie anyway, but the biggest uproar in Ireland was the leprauchán impersonation.

kewl stuff.

question, whats the use of the rails? Cant seem to see a connection between it and hte ifocus.

Sounds like a "killer" scene haha... I know that was corny... But seriously, that does sound cool... Can't wait to see it...

Hey, I just wanted to wish you guys the best of luck with your film. I grew up in Lawrence, MA, not too far from Boston, and I'm always happy to hear about any productions in MA-particularly indie films.

Here to wish you the best of luck on the film. Happy St. Pat's too!

I realize it's a 'peek' at an investor pitch piece but you might wanna revisit the sound. Not to nit-pick but it is half the film. Try some new body f/x for the knife hits. And his last dubbed line-insert is sound-right while he's screen-left. Just trying to help.

Two of your suggestions proved very useful. The dubbed in audio should be screen-left. My speakers are backwards. haha. Thanks. And I thought the body f/x were a too loud. He stabbing through the guys chest plate and ribs so it needs to sound like bones are cracking. Was it that the SFX was too loud or was it the SFX itself. We got an Oktava and Ligthing kit a few days after we shot that. The audio was off the camera.

Glad it helped out. Felt bad after posting. Nothing quite like getting psyched about a great project only to have some stranger offer nitpicky tech notes.

I think the effects will probably work. There's a difference in EQ between the room and the FX source files. Hard to describe sound on a message board......

I'd say they are more 'tinny' towards the higher end whereas that garage and the guys' voices are more midranged. Take the high-end down and blend them with room tone. Say you have 30 seconds of room tone or ambience of the garage that acts as a 'bed' under their ongoing dialogue. Whether they're speaking or not, there's always the 'hum' of the garage-space. When he stabs the guy OR when your main guy says his last line, there's still an undercurrent of that hum to mix it with.

It may be more involved than you want to get but sound design can bring the production design up with it. Is it a parking garage? Maybe a distant elevator shaft effect, cop cars, outside traffic. It might hide audio cuts, blend the body hits and sneak in his dubbed line. I'm no mixer but I've seen some guys do some wild stuff that sold a scene.

Sorry to ramble on - hope some of this helps.
