Touch Auto Focus??

I just got the HMC40 yesterday. I watched the online review of it someone posted several days ago and noticed the touch auto focus feature. For some reason, I am not getting it to work how I thought it would. My auto/manual switch is in manual. I do have focus and iris set to auto however. I touch the screen to bring up the f navi menu and then press the AF button. I see a red box for a few seconds, then it disappears. After that, I touch some area on the screen and the green box appears. Based on that guys online video, I assumed that the part I touched would be in focus and the rest of the image would be blurry, as the online review does when he touches the car tire for instance. I have digital zoom turned off, I am not zoomed in at all, face detection is off. Am I doing something wrong or does the touch auto-focus not work this way?

If you are filming 2 subjects for example then one of the subjects have to be a little distance from one another in order to use the feature. I could be wrong but that is what I have been doing. Also the closer subject has to be a little close to the camera...The Depth of field is not so great on it but I like it.
