Top Scareist Movies of all time!

J.R. Hudson

Spirit Animal
We have been discussing our favorite fight scenes/duels and westerns and now its time for:

[glow=red,2,300]The Scariest Scenes of All Time![/glow]

Not particular movie but CLASSIC SCARY SCENES.  One that comes to mind for me; Jamie Lee Curtis is crouched down in the threshold between the bedroom and hallway after moments earlier putting a hanger in Michael Myers eyeball.  Is he dead?  NO!  He sits up in the background and I am 8 years old and losing my mind.

HALLOWEEN has many moments like this for me from the opening of the Mental Hospital and the patients running around in the rain to the scene when Jamie Lee is trying to get out of the Greenhouse (but the garden tool is propped to prevent unlocking the doors).

Great great great Horror Classic.

Halloween... good stuff.

How 'bout...

Aliens... plenty of scares, but one of the great scenes is when the colonial marines have sealed themselves in the command center and their motion sensor begins beeping and they can't figure out where the hell the aliens could have gotten in... Michael Biehn ("Hicks") pops a ceiling panel, sticks his head up through the gap... and sees an army of aliens racing at him.

Carpenter's The Thing... The blood test. And the dog cage scene.

The Terminator... every time the Terminator comes back to life, but especially the first time, after the shoot-out at the Tech Noir nightclub, and Reese tells Sarah, "Come with me if you want to live" as the Terminator sits up outside.

The Exorcist... take your pick.

Rosemary's Baby... Rosemary's nightmare.

The Conversation... the murder scene and the blood spilling out of the toilet.

A Nightmare on Elm Street... all the cool, nightmarish surreality (long-armed Freddy, the hall monitor with the finger-knives, etc.)

Day of the Dead... the hands and arms bursting through the walls in the opening scene (and the zombies rushing into the elevator in "Dawn of the Dead").

The Twilight Zone tv series... plenty of creepiness, but one of the scariest episodes was "The Howling Man," in which some monks have imprisoned a man claiming to be the devil. Classic climax where a guy releases the prince of darkness, who transforms into his true demonic visage as he walks purposefully past a series of columns (transforming further into Satan as he passes each column).

Though I hated most of the "Dawn of the Dead" remake, the scene in which Sarah Polley and her boyfriend are attacked by their zombified neighbor child and Sarah's subsequent escape by car was a nail-biting sequence.

The opening of the Ark in "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Those angels of death scared the **** out of me when I first saw the movie (at age 12).

The Road Warrior... Wez popping up from the front of the oil tanker near the end of the climactic chase.

And perhaps the scariest moment in any movie ever... American Idol's Justin and Kelly trying to act in "From Justin to Kelly." Terrifying.

Will post again if I remember any others...

Man I love Halloween. If John Carpenter keeps up his crappy movies it will not matter to me. He will forever be in my opinion one of the greatest directors for Halloween and The Thing (aswell as many others).

Oh and as far as a scary scene goes.

Alien when Dallas turns around in the vent system and the alien is there. Classic.

Nice ones!  :D  Especially JC's The Thing and the blood test.  That was so damn cool.

Garry: I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time, I'd rather not spend the rest of this winter TIED TO THIS ****ING COUCH!

And yes, the opening 15 minutes of the new Dawn of the Dead is one of the cooler openings in recent memory.

Silence of the Lambs - When Jodie goes down to see Lector for the first time.

An American Werewolf in London -

Jack Goodman: Stick to the road.
David Kessler: Beware of the moors.
Jack Goodman: Ooops.

Pyscho - Shower scene!

Seriously, though, scenes which scared the bejeezus out of me at the time:

The long T. Rex scene in "Jurassic Park"

The ice truck scene in "Joy Ride"

The clown popping out from under the bed in "Poltergeist"

The first Alien ripping its way out of John Hurt . . .

Nice! Keitel has another scary one in the Bad Lieutenent. It's like if you offer full frontal in your movie he's in.

Not sure if you'd consider this a scene per say, but in "The Ring", when the mother is talking to Naomi Watts after the funeral and says something like "you should have seen her." Then we see a quick flash of the dead girl propped up in the closet all ****ed up... that scared the beejeezes out of me and set up the fear inside me for the rest of the film.

Pretty well any scene in "The Shining". Freakiest of all is when we see the people in the one room and one guy is in the pig suit.

In "28 Days Later" when he walks into the church and there's the piles of dead bodies. He shouts out "Hello" and 2 heads turn from amidst the pile.

Yes! That scene in 28 Days Later is classic. And then the FATHER comes out of the door. Freaky stuff and The Shining just has some scary visuals (Blood pouring out of the elevators).

How about:

The Hand coming out of the Grave in CARRIE at the end? Scared the hell out of me.

Stabb!!!

The shots from the Ring and 28 days later are are some of my favorite!!!

Also...
I was always freaked out by the scene in The Mothman Prophecies...I don't know if it was because I was a little drunk...but:

When Richard Gere talks to the woman who saw "it" outside her window...she starts to explain...but then says "it had glowing eyes and was all black...and judging from the size of that tree...It was over 8 feet tall..."

8 FEET TALL??
I thought ****! If I saw that in real life, I'd flip the **** out!!! Now at night, I look out my window and always kind of expect a pair of glowing eyes looking back...

That film was actually pretty cool and the ending was a nice surprise.

SCREAM opening scene with Drew Barrymore. I wasn't exactly scared per se but I found this scene a thrilling opener. You knew you were in for a fun movie.

Ghostbusters was a great film.

How about:

The Fog - Classic Carpenter.

Re: Scariest Scene of All Time!

Yes -- Ghostbusters is my all-time favorite.

Had a little viewing party on the night of its 20th anniversary (did I say 20th? :o) ). Was hoping for a 20th Anniversary DVD spectacular (with a DTS soundtrack), but this did not happen.

Re: Scariest Scene of All Time!

Re: Scariest Scene of All Time!

Three friends and I dressed up as the Ghostbusters a couple years ago at Halloween - we made our own outfits, and they looked great! Man was that fun...

Re: Scariest Scene of All Time!

Re: Scariest Scene of All Time!

Good call on the 28 Days Later scene. Also love the scene where they were fleeing the infected up the stairwell of the apartment building. Very nightmarish.

As for the The Fog, my favorite bit was always the very end, when the ghost lepers return and the captain raises his sword and swings it down on the priest, cut to black, cue the cool Carpenter score.

For me, the scariest moments in "The Ring" are the increasingly longer shots of the well, showing a little more each time, particularly the one that cuts out just as you see the girl's arm reaching out, and the one where she fully climbs out just before crawling out of the tv...

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Leatherface's first appearance in the movie, when he slides open that metal door and bonks the guy with the mallet, then drags him back into the room and shuts the door.

Re: Scariest Scene of All Time!

Re: Scariest Scene of All Time!

Yes! That scene in TCM scared the doo-doo out of me!

Another scene that made jump was in Signs, when Mel Gibson had the knife and was looking under the pantry door and the alien hand comes out. Made me pounce of my seat like a leapard on a lame critter.

Another good jump scare is in Frailty(one of my favorite movies) when that Paxton's son runs towards the screen with the axe.

But the movie that had me wishing for my teddy bear through the entire movie was The Exorcist. Holy. Crap. That spider walk down the stairs seemed to stick out.

Another terrifying moment in the Shining was the bathroom scene. One minute I'm like an old man on viagra and then the next I'm tossing my cookies because of what that women turns into. :o
