I think Callaghan is officially either our Mr. Top Ten or our Letterman. Great list though and I agree with most of it.

I'm just shocked that there is no mention of Carlin yet, although he pissed me off when I paid $200 for 2 tickets to see him and he did the same act he had just done the week prior on HBO... Bastard owes me two bills.

Where's Phyllis Diller?:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

But seriously folks....

Callaghan, you really love the old school. Gotta respect that. My tastes are a little more towards the humorists I grew up listening to and a couple recent ones.

1. Richard Pryor
"George Foreman had an interesting boxing style. None. He would come into the ring and ask 'Which one of you'se the ref? Cause I'm gonna kill the other motherfvker."

2. Steven Wright
"I used to live on a one-way dead end street."

3. Eddie Murphy
"Well, tell Bill I said have a Coke and a smile and shut the fvck up. Jello pudding-eating motherfvcker."

4. George Carlin
"Well, if crime fighters fight crime and fire fighters fight fire, what do freedom fighters fight? They never mention that part to us, do they? "

5. Dave Chapelle
"Now remember it's two o'clock in the morning in the ghetto. And there was a f'n baby standing on the corner. And the baby didn't look scared."

6. Bill Cosby
"Let us now set forth one of the fundamental truths about marriage: the wife is in charge. "

7. Norm MacDonald
"In Washington State, elementary school teacher Mary Kay LeTourneau pleaded guilty to having sex with a sixth-grade student. LeTourneau has been branded a sex offender, or as the kids refer to her, 'the greatest teacher of all time.'"

8. Jerry Seinfeld
"Why does that pharmacist have to be two and a half feet higher than everybody else? Who the hell is this guy? "Clear out everybody I'm workin with pills up here. I'm taking pills from this big bottle and then I'm gonna put them in a little bottle!"

9. Chris Rock
"It's hard to defend "I've got hos in different area codes". It's hard to defend "Move *****, get out the way"

10. Robin Williams
"You know in England if you commit a crime, the police don't have a gun and you don't have a gun. So if you commit a crime: "Stop! Or, or I'll say stop again!"

This is my first thought out post to a Callaghan list. Damn it's draining and time consuming. But it feels good to get it out.

Also, there are many stand ups I haven't heard so they could not be included. Especially many from the older generations.

I used to love Carlin but he's turned into an angry old man and I can't stand to watch him anymore.

I agree. His old stuff is great though and for list placement I rank according to the height of their performance.

Though I obviously do long for the old school days...

When I say "of all time", I try to mean just that. Many seem to prefer to include more of an "of my lifetime" or a "since the 1970's" kind of theme to there lists...both of which I can dig. But personally, I tend to look at the big picture.

Honestly, my approach makes the goddamned things all the more difficult to narrow down to ten.

Two great lists so far, fellas...keep em coming!

Welcome to the fold.

Well, the biggest requirement that I had was the people in my list had to make be laugh on a consistent basis. While I respected some of the "old timers" I just didn't find them funny. They occasionally made me smile, but seldom made me laugh. Comedy is terribly subjective, more so than movies, so I can understand how someone I might not find funny, will bring belly laughs to others. The funniest act I ever saw live was Jay Leno. Almost two hours of standup without a break. My cheeks hurt so bad from laughing I couldn't believe it.

I'm young, so this is a lame list.....

10. Brad Silverman

9. Jay Leno

8. Abbot and Costello (I think they're considered stand-up)

7. Jerry Seinfeld

6. Eddie Murphy

5. Chris Rock

4. Bernie Mac

3. Bill Cosby

2. Dane Cook LOL!

1. Ralphie May (he's fat and I just couldn't stop laughing, every time I saw him)

10. Gallagher (watermelons anyone?)
09. Stephen Wright (king of deadpan one liners)
08. Steve Martin (before his movie career)
07. Sinbad (Funny Funny Guy)
06. Jeff Foxworthy (Redneck made fashionable)
05. Rodney Dangerfield (Respectable disrespect)
04. Bill Cosby (It wasnt the jello ads that made me laugh)
03. Bob Newhart (One way phone conversations)
02. Henny Youngman (King of all one liners)
01. Carson (Still the best of all late night)

 I would put Dane Cook at the number one spot for the worst of the worst all time comedian list...His bust would prominently be displayed in the Stand-UP Hall of Shame next to that of Paulie Shore and Sinbad.

Speaking of joke-tellers, I think the nation itself is telling me a doozie. I don't believe for a moment that this cat Dane Cook is really so widely popular...nor is he really considered to be hysterically funny by so many people. Come on, America...hit me with the punchline already.

How about russell peters? I think he's pretty new though, but he's pretty funny to me. I havent heard enough seperate comedians to fill up a top 10 list though, but i'd say russell peters definitely deserves mention

That said i havent heard much of the greats, save for george carlin's piece about airport security. Now THAT was good

The top three for me will always be Richard Pryor, George Carlin and Sam Kinison.

Much as I liked Sam, he wasn't around long enough for me to tell if he had it or just had it at the right moment.

Like Bobcat.

And, since we're on Bobs, anyone put Newhart in their list? Didn't see it.

Is Lenny stand-up enough? Or has he been relegated to "political commentator" these days? Or Mort Sahl?

10. Bob Newhart
9. Woody Allen
7. Ellen Dejeneres
6. George Carlin
5. Bill Cosby
4. Richard Pryor
3. Robin Williams
2. Eddie Murphy
1. Jerry Seinfeld

Yes, Im sure if you ask me tomorrow this list might be slightly moved around...but most of these names would still be on this list. Jerry Seinfeld...he has been my fav since I was 15. Pound for pound, to me, he is the single best stand-up comedy "writer".
