definitely go with bill hicks, he seems to be one of the few u.s. comedians mentioned whose humour seemed consistently relevant this side of the Atlantic. i know comedy is pretty reliant on culture & context so my choices probably fall into the same trap, & mainly of my generation, but after hicks I like
Eddie Izzard
Peter Kay
Bill Bailey
Billy connolly
Tommy Cooper
Steven Wright
Lenny Bruce
Milton Jones
Andy kaufman

I saw Eddie Izzard on an HBO special about 5 years ago and I thought for SURE he was going to just blow up. I thought he was great. But, I haven't seen him since...

1. Richard Pryor. head and shoulders above all others IMO
2. Lenny Bruce
3. Bill Cosby
4. Andy Kaufman
5. Woody Allen
6. Eddie Murphy
7.George Carlin
8. Jon Stewart
9. Chris Rock
10. Dennis Miller (really - he used to be funny, believe it or not).

hon. mention: David Cross

The funniest one I ever saw in person was Buddy Hackett. His setup was impeccable and the puchline was dirty as hell.

Another great I've seen in person is Bill Cosby. He wasn't dirty at all but his setup and delivery is as clever as they come.

King of the one liners Henny Youngman.

Yeah, but Stephen Wright has kinda taken that title for his own.
"It doesn't matter what temperature a room is, it's always room temperature."
"I got stopped by a cop the other day. He said, "Why'd you run that stop sign?" I said, "Because I don't believe everything I read.""

I love Mitch Hedberg, I have almost all of his stuff, but I think he passed away before he would ever reach the top 10. I also like David Cross, and many other smaller comedians. They need to still test the tides of time. I miss Mitch.
