Okay, type in sennheiser g3 into bhphoto... that is the lav system that I want to get but I don't know why there are so many choices...
please help

There are three different frequency blocks (A, B, and G). Do some research on which frequencies are most clogged in your area, and pick a block that's not as crowded.

There are kits with two different kinds of lav: the ME4, which is cardioid, and the ME2 which is omni. You want to make sure you have an omni.

I am not trying to take any business away from B&H, but Chadfish posted some information about a deal that Tapeworks is Texas is running on the Sennheiser lavs until Dec. 31. The information he posted is the next to the last entry in this thread, I also quoted it below: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?231440-Rode-video-mic-Vs-Rode-Stereo-video-mic/page5

I was wanting to get the EW100ENG-G3 system myself, but the price was too steep and my budget too tight. With the pricing they (Tapeworks) is quoting, I am going to be able to get the EW100ENG-G3 system after all.

I hope this info is helpful.

Begin Chadfish quote:
I have used the Sennheiser G3 plug-on transmitter to great effect. Until the 31st Tapeworks in Texas is selling the Senn Ge system for 450.00 (normally 600.00) that the larger package with the plug-on transmitter for 600.00 (normally 800.00) I just took an XLR out of the PA, attached my in-line attenuator to pad down the signal from Lne to Mic, then captured the audio in my camera through the receiver. Totally simple and it sounded great. In a pinch you could put a mic on a boom and get it as close to a speaker as possible.

Here's the message from Scott at Tapeworks. I'd call him and see what he can do. Even if you need to ship it overseas, the money you save on this deal is so great it won't matter. I have never seen sennheiser wireless at this good of a price.

It's the best deal EVER on Senn G3 wireless. I've been tracking these things for 6 years and they never dipped below 600.00 for the basic kit. Not it's like you can get the Plug-on transmitter for free. The Plug-on does not provide Phantom power, but it's great for interview mics that don't require phantom, or for self powered condensers like the NTG-2. Anyway.... best deal ever.

Well the BEST deal was the Rode NTG-3 that came with a free blimp from Rode, and a bree boom pole from DVeStore. Buy a 700.00 mic, get 525.00 worth of stuff. But still the G3 thing is frickin' awesome.

I am one person that took that deal and boy am I happy, Chadfish hooked me up with the info

how would i find out what frequencies are most used in my area? is this an internet search thing or a calling around thing? if calling around, where would i start? its arkansas so theres not many production companies around...

wow- thanks so much for that link... i did my zip code (72032 in conway, ar) and am still not quite sure... if someone has time could you verify for me... i am thinking it looks like B (626 - 668 MHZ) might have enough vacanies... sorry to have someone babysit for me but would love a second opinion on that

Any of the three options should work.

Here is an easy way to read the resulting Sennheiser chart: Green is good, Yellow is most likely acceptable, White is taken and Red is off limits.

So with that in mind, I think you will be safe with any of the three options.
Option A: 516-558 shows 2 green and 2 yellow.
Option B: 626-668 shows 3 green and no yellow.
Option G: 566-608 shows 3 green and no yellow.

So, option "A" could potentially give you 4 frequency spots, but with either "B" or "G" you get 3 vacant spots guaranteed, at least until those frequencies get used in the future. In my area I only have one vancant (green) spot and lots of yellow, so it was an easy choice, "A" was the only one that gave me a green spot to use.

If I were you, I would go with "B" or "G".

I hope this helps.

i have an SM-58 shure microphone from my old band days... will this mic work with the plug-on transmitter... if so, i'll just throw that in the camera bag to have it with me at all times just in case i want to hand off the microphone to someone

Yes, your Shure SM-58 will work with the plug-on transmitter. It does not supply phantom power, so you either need to have a dynamic mic like the SM-58 or a condenser mic that is self-powered. Keep in mind you cannot use the lav/transmitter and plug-on transmitter at the same time.
