Tom Shadyac - Hollywood Dropout

I hope he hangs on to enough of his money to ensure a lack of it doesn't ruin his life in later years. It sounds like he may be swinging too far in the other direction. Trying to change the world is a fine line based on your circle of influence... and once you extend yourself too far beyond that you're at high risk. Perhaps he's still within that circle of influence because he's made movies that went to a global audience... but it's always scary to me when a lotto winner, etc. opens the door to say "I got too much money and I want to give it away"... because that's a bottomless pit.

My advice (to everybody) is to change what you can... by helping who you can, but focus your efforts on those who are willing to help themselves at the same time.

His analysis of the system of competitive human nature is nothing new... that's all programmed into EVERY LIVING THING on this planet. Sure... we should all make an effort to rise above it, but at the same time you need to compartmentalize your benevolence or that same system of "grab everything you can" will come in and grab what it can from you as well. Sucks... but it's true. Anytime I hear that somebody's decided to be a philanthropist I hope it's driven 90% by intellect and 10% by emotion, rather then the other way around.

Someone pointed out having two trailers in Malibu isn't exactly cheap living, so he must have a nice chunk of change hidden away somewhere.
