Tokina, Tamron and, erm, Astrodesign join Micro 4/3

Yes, I saw this on the www.43rumors.com site this morning.

It's great that more companies are coming on board, and hopefully Tamron will start filling the lens gaps that Olympus and Panasonic have been leaving up until now.

This can only be good news for us - I think Tamron lenses are junk but they'll be cheap, and Tokina is great news. As for Astrodesign, anyone heard of them? Apparently they make video equipment but it's the first I've heard. http://www.astrodesign.co.jp/english/product/ah-4410-a_ap-4411-a_am-4412

Has Tamrons standard dropped?
I had an 80-200 f2.8 on a Canon F1 years ago.

absolutely cracking piece of glass.

And I remember the anniversary 180mm f2.5 was a highly desirable lens when it came out too.

Tokina was the lesser company in those days.

I think Tamron just makes a wider berth of glass, cheap to expensive, and typically people buy the lower end ones for DSLRS. Well, I know I have. :'D
There's a culprit even in my user picture.

Tamron is definitely hit or miss. They have decent glass for the price, and some bad glass for the price.

Sigma, however, is one to watch. If they have some M4/3 specific glass coming I can only imagine it being extremely popular material.

I've read a lot of reviews like this one:

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Tamron-17-50mm-f-2.8-XR-Di-II-Lens-Review.aspx

It seems to compare the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 XR Di II LD IF favorably to similar lenses from Sigma and Canon.

I have the Tamron 17-50 and I get images that Ifind pleasing... others may disagree. :-)

well i dont know, that news did not bring any optimism in me...... sigma joined to m4/3 like a year ago...... but i have not seen any new products at all

Kenko/Tokina and Sigma on M43

Kenko/Tokina and Sigma on M43

Kenko Tokina is the latest corporate name from the Hoya empire - Kenko and Tokina are both owned by Hoya, and a corporate re-org have them as the same company now. So yes, Kenko Tokina is the same company that makes Tokina lenses.

Sigma showed two prime lenses at CES a few weeks ago for M43 and NEX - they will be shipping this spring at some point. 19mm f/2.8 and 30mm f/2.8. No ship date nor pricing were announced.

Tokina is a great lens company, but they are very slow at releasing new product, so don't expect any M43 products from them anytime soon. I can't see anything coming from them in 2012.

Tamron, like Sigma, like Tokina, like Canon, have some good lenses, some great lenses, and some so-so lenses. It really is a lens-by-lens basis on what we recommend to people, not brand. Pretty much anything from Nikon, Zeiss or Leica you can blanket recommend, but everyone else no.

Yes, I've seen a few articles on these lenses, but for me they are too slow for prime lenses. I would rather pay more for f/2.0 or faster glass.
