F3: Tokina Cine lenses 16-28 and 11-16 announced at NAB

Both T3. Both rehoused for a longer throw, not just geared. Plus the 16-28mm will also be available in PL as well as Nikon and Canon. (It's huge.)

List price on the 16-28 is $5,500 available around July. List on the 11-16 approx $2,000, available August. Street prices will be less.

These are two of Tokina's top lenses that are most often picked for a rehousing conversion by Duclos and GL Optics.

The 11-16 is overpriced IMO - I'd rather get a Duclos version for way less.

A shame as Tokina could have ended up as a pretty standard PL lens that everyone would have picked up 'just to have in their kit' (if they'd been cheaper) - but, at the price they're releasing at, it becomes a conscious choice ie 11-16 is normally around $600-$700 (ish) - if the PL was $1500-$2000, most would grab one without a thought.

The Sony 11-16 PL is $6999 on B&H so if the Tokina is around $3500 street price, that is not too bad. I guess one would have to compare it to the Duclos but it might be better. The 16-28 would be a great addition to the other PL prime lenses of 35, 50, 85 that come with the camera.

One thing that Matt Duclos said was that he tests each 11-16 before he modifies it and rejects a percentage that aren't up to his standards (even though they're up to the standards for Tokina.)

I wonder if Tokin will come out with a 28-70 in PL. The rumor has always been that the Tokina 28-70 uses the Angie cine formula. That would make a pretty usable set.

Maybe I'll just keep my Zeiss 80, 100 and 180 PL lenses and see what happens with Tokina. My problem is I don't have complete sets in any price range anymore. Rokinon, incomplete. Nikon, incomplete. Zeiss, incomplete. Argh.

Just curious as to where you're getting your prices from? In the video he does mention that the 11-16 will be less than $2000, and that prices will not change depending on the mount used. That's a lot better than $4500...

Remoteman you are absolutely right. Good catch. Brain fart on my part. To be clear the 11-16 is not being offered in PL mount though. Only the Duclos 11-16 is PL. I've corrected the original post.

Has anyone heard anything about these Tokina lenses? At NAB they said July for the release of the 16-28, and August for the release of the 11-16mm. I haven't seen either anywhere.

(Now if they'd only do their 28-70 in a PL mount at a decent price.)

I've got a pre-production version of the 16-28/3 (it's labeled T3 for this rehouse I believe) with me right now, testing it over the next few days along with some new ND filters.

Happy to answer any questions.

Testing on Blackmagic cameras and likely an Epic.

Cool, what camera you testing it on?

cheers,

2.5K, Pocket Camera (RAW), and likely Epic if I can get to the camera in time. I'm in LA, if any of you F3/F5/F55 shooters want to test it on your camera let me know, I'm down to play.

Also testing out Hoya (sister brand) ProND filters that were just announced about two weeks ago. The range is kind of wild haha. 0.3 - 3.0

It would be interesting if you can test the NDs for color shift.

Oh trust me... I'm on it. This is why I originally contacted them to begin with. The moment I read that Press Release I was all over it.

A reseller told me that they're supposedly comparable to BandPro's TrueNDs. If they're anywhere near that I imagine these will be back ordered for some time to come.

Again, if any of you gents want to test on your cameras I'm in West LA and can meet up. The more info we have to share the better.

Sounds good. I would strongly recommend at least super 35mm sensor in order to really see the qualities on the edges of the lens, especially when zooming throughout the range, etc..

Cheers,
