Today while cutting grass, it occured to me...

And don't disrespect Tommy Selleck. :)

I had kind of a boyhood man crush on JMV...never realized it til now. Thanks a ****ing lot.

Oddly, I caught an episode of Magnum today... Jim, it was the strangest thing for that to pop into my head, I never even liked JMV, though I did like the helicopter. I am in constant awe of our brains and conciousnesses, and in particular the nonsense that is shown to us in dreams that we would never think up on our own...but JMV of all things...while thinking of Vietnam POW's being envious of me?

I would be curious to know what you guys think of when cutting grass. It's a unique mental time because you know what youre doing for the most part so you dont have to concentrate too much on the act itself (aside from making artistic patterns and contours as you cut) so you have a lot of room to go off into the aethers a bit and explore.

And say, Jim, whatchoobeen readin lately?

Mostly my Final Cut Express book. I'm in a real bind about outputting correctly. But I also just finished "What they Don't Teach You In Film School" which had a few nuggets in it. But it was mostly bathroom reading.

I won't let myself open the new Harry Potter book. It will suck me in and i have way too much editing to do.

When I mow, I usually write in my head. It's where I flesh out storylines and dialogue. Either that, or I pretend I'm arguing with the missus. That way I can say the stuff outloud without getting thrown out of the house. :)

BTW, I think Tom Selleck is one of the most underrated actors around.

I've reverted back to reading movie making related material for a wee bit...re-reading Extreme DV by Rick Schmidt, right on the heels of finishing The Smartest Guys In The Room (about Enron) and The United States Of Wal-Mart. Got in a weird corporate interest mood....fascinating reads. What They Dont Teach You In Film School was the second movie making book I got when I first got the interest, and it had some wonderfully inspirational moments here and there. I found it to be well worth my while, especially at that particular phase of my path.

I work on screen ideas while cutting a lot too...it's a great time to just let things swoosh around freely and grab the good stuff.

"BTW, I think Tom Selleck is one of the most underrated actors around."

Really now....I'm in no way disputing that, but would never have thought of it. Guess thats one of the major factors in being underrated, that not enough people think about whatever it is. But I do admire his work on Magnum, seriously.....as a matter of fact, ALL the characters on that show had a magical dynamic between them...especially Thomas and Higgins. Thank goodness it was given an hour per episode so it could be paced in such a manner that you could settle in with the people and they could include some "slower", more human moments.

Yea, it's certainly dated now in a lot of ways, but i still enjoy it now and again. The thing I like about Selleck is his range. He's done some dramatic cable movies which he was good in, plus he does the light comedy/action thing in such a self-effacing way. But he has made some BAD movies in his day.

I imagine there are a lot of actors like that out there.

Yeah; you can't put Magnum in the same class as those other fags. (not that there's anything wrong with that)

In honor of Tom, we ought to have a thread where we all post pics of ourselves with mustaches. Just grow em for a few days and then right before you shave them off, snap a pic.

Hudson, you're up :)
