Ban Me Please!
Hey everybody just a warning: Long-winded note ahead.
I always enjoy the good and bad of everything on this site and I've been hanging around for a while learning a lot of great things. I figured it might be a good idea to present the group with a problem I'm having.
The last film I shot was a while back and was on film. The budget was about $120k + and about half of that went to crew, food and production expenses and the rest went to maintaining post production for a year and all the other costs that video usually doesn't have.
I am about to embark on a 3-4 year real estate project that will have me busy beyond my wildest dreams, which means no time for filmmaking.
I have a project that I have been working on that I had planned on shooting this Winter (Jan/Feb) after having to push from last winter. I also planned on pushing it back even further if I couldn't get a solid 100k together.
With this real estate project I might have a chance to shoot in Jan/Feb with about $30k and if that doesn't happen it means waiting another 4 years.
THE QUESTIONS ARE: Do I just go for it and shoot it with what I have or put it all on the back burner? can I bring in crew and such from other states to work for little more than great food and boarding (I'm used to paying at least decent wages) ?
I have a decent FCP editing system, Magiqcam, two dollies, 5 lights, c-stands , cobra crane and access to the DVX that I just sold oh and a couple of not too high-end mics. I also have lots of little bits of equipment. So except for extra grip equipment and a better mic setup, I've got 90% of what is needed for equipment.
I also have most of the locations at my full disposal.
The downside is that I wanted to shoot on the HVX, but with the current developments I didn't buy one and plus I'm not a DP. I do have somebody that wants to shoot, but he doesn't have a lot of narrative experience.
also, I'm used to film-style shooting and there really isn't a strong indie film scene in Phoenix yet. It's getting there, but I don't know too many people here. (I'm originally from Seattle).
Just so you it's known it's a low-tech sci-fi movie that takes place in regular houses with mostly implied technologies (maybe some after effects shots of computer screens and such). Pretty character driven without many effects of any kind.
I was thinking about shooting the opening teaser scene this summer and posting it to see if I could entice people to work on it with me.
Any advice would be helpful. I think I am just so jaded after spending so much money on my last film that I'm torn between being overly cautious and needing to make another feature.
Thanks so much,
Jason
