To P2 or not to P2 - That is the question!

And how I learned to stop worrying about the HVX :)

Ok, I have it! Who wants to wait for March/April/May for the firestore. I want to go tapeless asap. Just sold my DVX100a to a good friend - so I am on the bandwagon. I think the best plan is to get the two 8gb card deal and sell one of them to one of you. I think that I could be very happy with just 1 8gb card and a firewire on set "download drive"
Camera - $5500
Full packg - $8900
two 8gb P2 - $3400 / $1700 per 8gb

Total cost for cam + 1 8gb = $7200

$7200 is much better budgetwise than $8900. Add HDD for ~ $300 and you are done. This way, when the 16gb cards come out, you have a 16/8gb combo - which is probably more cost effective than 2 8gb & 1 16.

So, Who wants to make a deal? I want to sell a 8gb card for $1700. Any offers?

I am in the LA/Orange County area and will be buying from EVS.

I am in Northern Orange county and will be purchasing my HVX from EVS without any cards (I am planning on renting what I will need). I might be interested in one of the two 8G cards. PM me when you get yours from EVS (I am currently #24 on the list).

Wait until after the big press rollout on Dec. 8th before making any decisions. Jan talked about the possibility of adding additional bundles with 4gb cards, so until the announcements are made, it's probably premature to commit to one bundle or the other...

Dec. 8 feels like the Crop Report Announcement in "Trading Places".

Soarprod, in case you don't get the opportunity to buy the whole package with 2 cards, you can always buy just one card. It is a bit more expensive, by about a $150, but then you don't get stuck having to sell a card and losing 2% on paypal etc.

I'm on a budget too. I cannot afford the 8 gig card...or even the 4 gig card. Is there any plan to get like maybe a 200 Megabyte P2? That would save me lotsa mulah.

I'm interested. I thought about making the offer as well, but I'm torn between one 8gb P2 card or the Focus 80gb drive. They are just about the same price, but there's the obvious 10x storage on the Firestore.

Is the functionality of the P2 make it still a winner???

200 megabyte? That'd get you like 15 seconds of footage...

No, the smallest card you're likely to get is the 4gb. There was a 2gb, but it was designed for the SD camera only; the 4gb card is designed to support HD as well.

Well, it's too soon to answer that, because we don't know what the functionality of the Firestore will be. Depends on how they design it. If they design it such that it plugs into a P2 slot and appears to the camera as if it's a big P2 card, that would be most interesting. If it plugs in through the firewire port, that's a lot less interesting, and an 8gb P2 card would have some serious workflow advantages over that.

What about waiting for the compatible Firestore drive? I've read in a press release that it will be available sometime in early to mid 2006 for $2000.00 or under. I'm not sure if I'm missing a big caveat, but it seems like this would be a far more effiicient and economical means of capturing DVPRO HD footage. The SD models capture something like 40 gigs of footage but I'm not sure what the new HD devices will hold. Anyone know?

Well we will also know a lot more at the Panny announcement next week, and get new pricing on the 4GB cards and packages, which are rumored to be very affordable. Watch Jan's posts.

Or even ONE 4 GB P2?
That's actually what I ordered -- the HVX and one 4 GB P2 card. It wasn't a bundle, just the two items separately.

I love the idea of P2, but it's a tad too expensive right now. One card will be just enough to get me going.

[It was enough 16 minutes to...] As I was said the ONE 4 GB P2 HVX bundle will be the most interesting configuration* for the majority, regarding the Firestore and Cine-Porter CP-2 news, so why not as a real bundle?

* and for this purpose as you can follow here

I didn't see any, but you can always buy just one 4GB card, we will have those separately just like the 8GB cards. They only cost a bit more than buying them as part of the package, but you get exactly what you need.
