To P2, or not to P2? That is the question...

Probably a real dumb question but..Is there harm in always using a p2 camera as a reader?

Why add more hours to your usage clock? Since tape, I have never used the camera for playback or transfer.

At some point electronics fail, I am trying to push that point out as long as possible so either resale value is higher or the equipment lasts longer.

Your p2 pricing is way out of date. You can get a 64gb card for $600.

Whoops, I just glanced at this on google to make my assumption - I looked at the big price up top not what b&h had it for:

Lol on that note we are considering dropping the EX1r and going with multiple HPX250's. We need timecode options!

Why would you not mount a $100 reader from Amtron in your PC? Just pop the card out of the camera into the reader and you can either edit from the card or copy the files into a folder. You can also view you card contents by using free "P2 viewer" software.
Good point. The single card reader I looked at was $300 (panasonic) which would be limiting. It could be used for ingest one at a time or direct editing from card only if the shoot was a "one card" shoot. If needed footage is on two cards then a single card reader would be only able to transfer and not work online. Still useful but not ideal.Multi card readers up the price too high.

And as a first time P2 guy, I love it. The cards cost half of what they use to go for --and compare reasonably well to the higher end CF cards as far as price.

When we purchased our HVX200 five years ago, a 8 GB p2 card cost us $1400.00.

We just purchased an E-series 64 GB p2 card for $600.00.

That's eight times the capacity for about half the initial price.

Wow! I knew it had dropped by half lately, but that's a huge difference. If it were still that high I couldn't even consider p2 :)
