to 24 or not 24

So what is the consensus, go with Native 24p or not? I tried it and so far, love it! But, I hear it can crash, and on a film, I'd hate for my camera to start acting up far from my computer....

have a spare card with firmware with no native patch. switch when there is a problem? I load a lower bitrate firmware on my card just in case but have yet needed to use it.

What Mr Fanny said. Using 25p with different backup patches on old SD cards and me too have not changed back to Native unchecked. You need a fully charged battery in hand though, if you need to update the firmware on the fly.

The disturbing problem I found in testing Native 24p is that it sometimes produces corrupted recordings that appear to play back normally. These flaws are visible but not easy to spot without using a frame analyzer. What seems to happen is that the AVCHD codec runs out of bitrate before encoding all frames in a GOP. It is then forced to write one or more empty frames at the end of the GOP. This causes the video to appear to pause or briefly revert back to the previous key frame at unpredictable points in the timeline.

While this encoder malfunction is fairly rare, I saw it often enough to conclude that it made Native 24p too unstable to support in my 40Mbps AVCHD High Reliability Patch:

I am fine with the native 24pN setting. It does freeze in completely static scenes with highest details in the sun. But in real life situations it almost never happens. I was two weeks in Italy and it happened twice, now I was 1 week in India and it didn't happen one single time.

Given the comfort, quality and speed of native AVCHD editing I can live with a rare freeze once in a while.

I shoot nature and wildlife. Happened to me every time I took the camera out.
Unchecked it and have yet to have another camera crash.

Really strange, as I also shoot almost exclusively outdoors. I am running on the older Ptool 3.6 with 38/40/42 and video buffer =40 settings.

Such scenes work for me (don't ask me why, I am using a sandisk extreme class 10 card):

i made many test shots in 40000000 / Native ON and 60000000 / Native OFF.
And subjectiv i found the native ON pics look more impressive with more deep and sharpness.
seems the wrapper makes the detail pixels a little blurry.
hoped the 60000000 looks better but in all cases i prevered the Native ON vid.

can anybody confirm / not confirm this?

my native ON/OFF vid screenshot to compare here:
