A lonely young illustrator finds a magic pen that makes whatever he draws come to life.
Here are some of our teaser images for our website/social media presence.

The Magician's Pen - A visually driven short film written and directed by myself, Donte Murry of Kite Flight Films, with cinematography by Alex U. Griffin.

Alex and I have worked together before on a visually driven short film that dealt with a fantastical premise. Our last short film "The Batting Cage" was an official selection of the 2012 Comic-Con Int'l Film Festival, and has played in a few other festivals as well.

Shoot dates - 9 days between Oct 25th - Nov4th
Shooting on - The Panavision Genesis thanks to a grant from the Panavision New Filmmaker Program! The Genesis has been used on films like "Ted", "Before The Devil Know's You're Dead", and "Superman Returns"
This film came together about 5 months ago when I was kicking around the idea of a short film about a magic pen that could make anything come to life. After a night of brainstorming with my DP, a story emerged about a lonely illustrator named Phillip. For years, he's struggled with women. He can't talk to them, he gets nervous around them, the list goes on and on. He's a good kid who finds solace from his loneliness in his art. He loves comic books, he loves to draw, and he loves to escape from the doldrums of his every day life by escaping into fantastical world he reads about or creates.
Phillip's uncle is Mort the Magician. Once upon a time, Mort was the most famous magician on the planet, but now, in his old age, his family is moving him into a retirement community. It's up to Phillip to clean up Mort's house, pack his clothes, and grab a couple of his favorite cigars from his office. While searching for these cigars, he discovers a box he's never seen before. Inside this box is a beautiful pen, the kind artists fall madly in love with immediately. Being the artist he is, the first thing he does is grab a piece of paper and begin to draw. Shortly thereafter, he realizes that this is no ordinary pen. Instead, it has the power to bring whatever he draws to life! So what is a guy who can't talk to women to do? Draw a beautiful woman of course. But when things don't go as planned Phillip finds himself going back to the drawing board....
We'll be posting more info soon, and updating as we go along. But for now, check out one of the last project's my DP and I have worked on together. It's a visually driven music video that deals with a similar theme of "hopeless romanticism". Since The Magician's Pen has very little dialogue, we shot this as practice for this short, and plan to employ a very similar visual scheme.
