title dilemma...w/ slight introduction

Hello everybody,

Fairly new to dvxuser.com, (great place by the way!!)--first ever dvxuser contest...first CONTEST even....(butterflies....). I'm an editor by trade, but over the last couple of years, have been drawn towards the eye-cup. I messed around for a while w/ my cousin's Canon GL1 however, I just picked up a dvx100b and and I'm having a ball w/ it!

I had been racking my brain on concepts since the announcement of 'Time Fest'. I even managed to rifle through the ol' dvxuser forums to find other people struggling to find their concepts as well-and in typical dvxuser.com fashion, many reached out to aid the young film-makers and offered advice, one of the methods which I tried, (I'll have to find the post and quote the fellow- to give him some credit)..

but it was essentially the tactic of: writing down words, ANY WORDS AT ALL-in a list, until it hits you square in the forehead....and I'll be.....BAM!--
20 words down or so, my concept, locations, sounds, imagery, came and overwhelmed me to the point of pure giddyness, reminiscent of Ralphy opening up and loading his brand new 'Red Rider BB Gun' on Xmas morn. Now mind you, this is my FIRST Script so PLEASE don't mistake my excited nature for an award-winning masterpiece...by no means am I expecting much! I'm just happy to be involved!

Anyhow-my dilemma, (one of many), is this:

In the process of putting together my stab at a short-film, I seemed to have chosen a name that I see is being used.--

working title: "LATE"

and there is a "LATE --- a film by Drew Ott" as well (I love your poster by the way).

The problem is, I'm kind of committed to it in terms of the story and have been for the last week. Unfortunately, I haven't been on the site, (or at least didn't see Drew's post.

My question is: What would be the rule of thumb?--I don't want to rub anyone the wrong way, and again, I'm new to this, so I just want to do what's right.

Is this common?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

I don't mind if you use the title. It's up to the mods though I suppose.

Yeah, I agree it is probably up to the mods (Larry? Barry?) But if you asked me, IMO, it is probably fine (as long as there is some way to disypher the two when voting)

Especially with such a simple/common title as "LATE." But what it really comes down to (given that the mods are cool with it) is whether or not you want to have te same title. If there is another option, you may want to go with that.

I won't try to give out suggestions for title changes without having first read your script (or at least a short synopsis) but just find out what the rules say (via mods) and then make your decision based on that. Good luck!

Thanks Drew, I appreciate it--I guess I'll have to find out what the mods say. Meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out an alternative title.. I'm thinking "Not Exactly Early" (lol).
 
Thanks guys, for the replies, (I appreciate the suggestions Robbie)--I'm hoping I can get it worked out. I'm still working out some kinks in the script so, there is room for adjustments, even to the title.

Nick, I'm in the process of writing up a synopsis, as this is my first piece, I'm trying to shave it down to a concise synopsis w/out giving too much away--AND w/out sounding like the girl from "American Pie" .....last year in band camp (gasp)..and then..(gasp)...and this happened..(gasp)...and then he... and then..and then...
A director I'm working for right now, asked me to deliver it in one sentence, and I absolutely tripped all over my tongue, trying to do so.

Yeah, so lots of things to work out

How about just for the Time Fest make it Zack Allignment's "LATE" to avoid any confusion. Then after the fest just "Late"

Your last name would be better of course than alligment.
 
Thanks Zim, I may end up doing something like that-however, I haven't ruled out renaming it all together.

Still ironing out script and shot details. I need to get a poster up!! Free time is hard to come by these days.

I'm a freelance editor so when the iron's hot-you gotta strike you, you know?! It's a shame, b/c in Jan./Feb. I had a few weeks that were not so hot, but I believe 'Lovefest' was in full swing then...I was more of a spectator, of posters, and such.

Phewww, I thought your title was going to be "The Dustin Rogan Project". That was a close one!

There is currently no rule that prevents you from using the same title as another entry. However, I would personally recommend against it as there will be the potential for confusion both at the time of voting and when making comments in your film's discussion thread.

Have you tried going to www.thesaurus.com and typing in "late"? I often do that when I have a common word in a title and want something a little more unique.

HaHhaha! Awesome!! the irony here is, that WAS a candidate early on, but I didn't have the balls to bring to your attention, (lol).

I figured "late" was a better fit.

yeah, we've headed down avenue (thesaurus), but are exploring other options as well. I'm thinking Drew's got this one sewn up. I certainly don't want to confuse people, furthermore, tarnish another filmmaker's efforts by title association.
I'll have to be quicker on the draw next time round-and get a poster/title up sooner--as oppsed to 'later'....sorry, couldn't help myself--

Definitely going through the newbie-hurdles right now, trying to figure a lot out.

I'm looking forward to my own project...its pure awesomeness in my head...but what I think is funny in my head isn't always the case once it is released upon the public. But I have a great feeling about this...hope we can pull it off...

Am thinking about entering into a fest for the first time, however I had an idea for a title but turns out an old tv show has the same name :<, am i able to use this or is this a no no??

That should be fine, unless it's a title like "The Andy Griffith Show" or "The Dick Van Dyke Show" or .. well, you get the idea :)
 
so I think we've finally decided on something we like--

working title: "Forgiving Moira"
