Titanic *spoilers?*

I was talking to someone the other day who hadn't seen Titanic and there were people around who had seen it and hated it. I was trying to talk it up.

Yes, the relationship between Jack and Rose is contrived, but then again, so are the relationships in Aliens, The Abyss, and Judgement Day. It's just Cameron's heavy-handedness.

But specific to Titanic:

GROUNDBREAKING and tactful CGI. Meticulous, giant disaster sequence.

The "Nearer my God to Thee" sequence? Yeah, it's flawless. I wish I could find the clip.

Let's not even bother with that genius continuous shot that ends the movie.

Sure, "My Heart Will Go On" was overplayed, but it was played because so many people had seen the movie.

Only saw the second half of this film...sort of saw it anyway...on HBO I think. Nothing about it made me want to check out the first half.

They cashed in my good will really early in this movie, which was, admittedly, exciting in the special effects aspect.

ROSE

Now I am looking through paintings I just bought by soon-to-be famous artists like Monet that are about to go down on the Titanic. Isn't this ironic and really, really artificially portentious?

OVERPLAYED ARISTOCRAT GUY
Hey, look at these crappy paintings that my silly fiancee is putting on the Titanic that is about to go down. They were painted by some clown named Picasso (winks at camera). All you people in the audience know who Picasso is, so this twist is so easy it's like playing hide and seek with a two-year-old .

Also, um, Bill Paxton never asked, "Hey Granny, do you know where the diamond is?"
