hi there, i'm new to this forum. but I just started shooting a project on the ex-1 and am somewhat shocked at how washed out the colors look, even after converted to quicktimes. I know there are a million tweaks that can be done, but since I'm already shooting and have little time with my subject, I was wondering if anyone could just give me some tips and suggestions for setting the picture profile.

I'm looking for the most filmic look possible, straight out of the camera. I know a lot can be done in post but I like to accomplish as much towards a good look with the source footage itself. Wondering if you have any suggesting for setting gamma, knee, blacks, black gamma, detail, skin detail, color correction, low key saturation and matrix? Have any of you found a combo that looks good?

Thank you so much.

Sony intentionally left the out-the-box settings on the bland side since they expect professionals to tweak the settings to their preferences. Research these pages...there is a ton of advice here if you look for it. Also Vortex Media's Doug Jenson has lots of advice in his books, pamphlets, and blog. And the BBC even has published their preferred specs.

A lot of this is absolutely and completely subjective. You will have to try them out for yourself. As for "richer colors" - I am assuming you mean "high saturation". In which case, set gamma to High Sat.

I know it's all subjective, but honestly I do not have all the knowledge necessary to properly wade through all the online material on it and make a judgement call, nor do I have time for extensive testing. that's why I was wondering if anyone on here had come up with a combo that they liked for skin tones and portrait type work. my subject is old and while I want to see the character in his face I don't want to see every pore. and i'm really not sure what the "looks" are behind cine1, 2, 3 and 4 ....
