HPX250: tips on sound

hello - so i have been using the 250 for my doco and picture wise everythings great.. the only thing im experiencing is sound problems.. for example they talk low and i adjust the volume accordingly and all of sudden they laugh and it goes to the red which pops... ill have to keep adjusting which is annoying.. i know its preferred to record sound separately but cant do this atm and im a one person shooter at this very moment...

does anyone have tips regarding recording people/sound specially when its not rehearsed and on the street style doco... i do use the manual and push the knob up and down accordingly the best i can but do if i do use the "auto" would that be any good?

not sure.. (im using a ntg2)

any helpful tips would be much appreciated.

I'd use the built in stereo mic as AGC for CH3-4. It's the ultimate safety net. If there's ever a screw up, mix the on-camera mic. XLR1 & XLR2 are on-cam shotgun or lav. I typically use AGC on the XLR1 w/ my Sanken CS3e shotgun and manual on the lav. Lav is very close to the subject and likely will not peak as much unless the subject is screaming. But when that happens, you have your XLR1 shotgun to cover the peak in AGC.

hello.. thanks for this.. i have the built in on channel 1 and the rhode on channel 2. So i should leave the limiter on for channel 2? what is the Mic GAIN1 AND MIC GAIN 2 do? so i can still manually set the settings while limiter is on?

For error free shooting in a past paced ENG environment, I always leave CH3-4 for the on camera mic. This allows full stereo. But the biggest reason is that you won't forget flipping the channel switches to the correct order. If I ever need another channel, I just plug in to XLR-2 and be done w/ it. No fiddling w/ confusing inputs. No distraction or doubt.
