Tips for a low light video

Hey everyone!

I usually feel very safe with my D90. I have shot in -20 celcius in the slopes, under water and so on.

But this week i'm gonna shoot a music video with a famous swedish artist and don't want to screw it up. It will be outdoors and it will be very dark. Luckily we will shoot in the city so I guess it will be pretty lit up from various street lights (a lot of diffrent lights= flicker?). I will only have 2 small lamps of this model:

the video will in the cinematography have pretty much these shots:

will I be able to pull it off with the lights mentioned? Please give me some low light tips!

Thanks!

You will have no problem with those lights, although I am not sure about flicker..
Also you may have a lot of noise, but it can be removed in post..

I don't know the aesthetic you will be looking for, so that creates a big if.
In general -
You need to trial the ambient lighting you will have. Don't turn up on the night with no idea.
You need some form of additional lighting regardless the ambient lighting you will have, and
this should also be subject to trial in situ.

I'm guessing that on the slopes and under water you were probably dealing with one light - the sun. Here you may be dealing with a dozen lights that you have no control over. The D90 is terrific in low light, but with so many light sources, and so many you can not control in terms of position and temperature, you need to find out how things look first and work out your camera settings - and lights you might bring - accordingly.

Good luck. It sounds like a good opportunity.

If it's a big opportunity, or an important job then why are you putting your trust into a camera you can't fully control? Rent a 7D for this job, I think that will set your mind at ease.

Glad you think that...thanks to control difficulties it seems to me that the D90 doesn't consistently look better than the D90 in low light.

I assume you mean the RED.

I am only going on the low light tests I saw done with the 5DII, D90 and the RED. The 5DII looked best, then the D90 , then the RED.

The tests were done by a scandinavian team, but I can't find the site anymore. Someone here may know.
