Tiny clunking noise

Okay... I just got my DVX100A today... Beautiful camera...

I have a quick question though...

When I took it out of its foam packing bag, I noticed a very small "clunk" noise as I dipped the front end down... Then, when I pull the front end back up and dip the rear end down, I get the other end of the "clunk."

My first thought was that something came loose during shipment however, when I powered it up, no more small clunking noise and everything seems to work fine.

As soon as I turn it off though, the small clunking noise returns if I did the front or rear end down a bit...

It's kind of like something going slightly off balance...

At this point, I'm assuming that it's supposed to do this since it totally stops when powered up...

Was wondering if I'm right?

Thanks,
Matt

Re: Tiny clunking noise

Okay, for some reason, I couldn't find any posts about the "clunk" noise...

Did some more searching and found out about the "clicking" noise... LOL.

Whew...

Feel much better now.

Never mind.

Matt

haha...too bad for the dvx sharks lurking around looking for another victim... ;D

Re: Tiny clunking noise

Okay...

Here's another trainee question...

I was under the impression that a much smaller battery came with the DVX100A...

My stock battery is rated at 5400mAh and it's definitely larger than others I've seen on friend's cameras... It's definitely a Panasonic battery: VW-VBD55 Li-ion battery...

Any idea how long this battery will last?

Thanks,

trainee...

Depends on so many factors that you will get a hundred answers. How old is the battery (older batteries hold a smaller charge) how many recharge cycles (the more the less power) how much zooming will you do (zooming is a power hog), how much tape will you roll, are you running a balanced powered mic off it (small but steady drain).

Re: Tiny clunking noise

Well, I'm assuming the battery is brand new since I just bought the camera...

As far as how I operate the camera i.e., zooms, tape, etc., I realize that is a major factor in how long the battery will last...

But that's not what I meant...

I meant just "basically" --how long will the battery last?

But clicking on the ad here at the bottom of the page I guess gives me my "general" answer if I compare the same logic used on the page...

If the DVXUser 3500 battery lasts approximately twice as long as the default 1600 battery that's discussed on the ordering page, then I assume my default 5400 battery will last 3 times as long... Roughly a little over 5 hours... Which is all I needed to know...

I just wasn't aware of Panasonic using as powerful a battery as I just received with my DVX100A.

Thanks again...

Re: Tiny clunking noise

What I meant was, don't bank on 3 - 4 - 5 or whatever hours. I always assume a battery listed for 4 hours with my camcorder gives me 2 hours in practice of regular use, 1 hour of constant use. Then I carry rechargers and spare batteries to make up for it all. That paranoia comes from the bad old days of the NP-1 and power hogs like the HL-79 which were rated for an hour and a half (no VTR) on the NP-1 but rarely lasted half that.

Simply put, I would rather be pleasantly surprised over how long my superbattery lasts.

Re: Tiny clunking noise

Slap,

I totally agree with you... I will NEVER count on any battery giving me the total hours promised... I always divide in half and go from there...

I'm a trainee with the DVX100A (and DVXUser.com) but not with video... LOL.

Thanks again...

Re: Tiny clunking noise

yeah.. seems they switched to the higher capacity cell.. That 5400mah battery is rated at 9 hours, but I betcha my lucky nickel it will only last around 5.

Re: Tiny clunking noise

I have two 5400 mAh batteries which I use regularly, and none of them has ever failed to carry me through an entire day of shooting, which means AT LEAST 5 or 6 hours (I don't use the power zoom much, though).

In my opinion, those batteries are excellent (better than the Canon ones I used with my old camera) and genuinely long-lasting.

Re: Tiny clunking noise

I was on a shoot today with a guy who had a 100A, and I noticed the battery was a CGR-D54... I guess Panasonic is packing those batteries as the default now? Sah-weet! That's a great, great battery, lasts a good five to six hours, and costs about $180 even at the discount stores. To get one free with the DVX is ... well, it's darn nice on Panasonic's part!

Re: Tiny clunking noise

I have that battery also. Best little investment to date. I had trouble finding my stock battery the other day because I hardly ever need it as a back up anymore.
I get all of six hours easy using the LCD and some what normal zooming. The only thing that is a drag about it is that it takes a while to charge it up. Thats when the stock battery come in handy(when I can find it).

Re: Tiny clunking noise

That is not fair!! It took me 51 posts to become Bronze. And now you are Bronze?
On the other hand, I just got promoted to Silver. Isn't that great?

All the best

Fidel.

Re: Tiny clunking noise

Actually, I have been here for a while but for some reason I could not log on (brain malfunction on my part), so I had to re-up again.
Being a trainee made me feel young again ;D

Re: Tiny clunking noise

Hello,
I also just opened up my brand new camera box and got the same click. As if it was some kind of flap swinging back and forth. i called my store (Tristatecamera.com) and they gave me an RMA imediately. I also got an error that says "Warning PSD NG" does anyone know what this means? I am returning it anyway, but I would still like to know what this is.

Thanks Guys

Re: Tiny clunking noise

Really? but do you kow what it is or what it's purpose is? Also did you see the other thing, about the Warning PDS NG message flashing in red on my display? I didn't see anything in the manual trouble shooting section or online. If you have any input I would gladly appreciate it.

Thanks
