GH2 Tiny CinemascopE (GH2 + small Berthiot anamorphic 2X)

I've found on Ebay for 41€ a Berthiot anamorphic 2X lens. I'm very happy because it is so small and so light, this is my first anamorphic experience, and it is not bulky at all !

I have attached it to a C-mount Fujian 35mm 1.7 with a ring and scotch tape. Badfully my fujian has problems with it's aperture and focus ring, but I'm going to buy another one ASAP, and will have one of the lightest and smallest anamorphic system for the GH2 !
The Berthiot anamorphic lens seems to be very rare, I did not find any trace of it on google, maybe it's for Super 8mm... The result is, at my opinion, very sharp, event @ the 1.7 Fujian aperture I've always have on this movie.
When I put it on the Fujian, the picture goes wider, maybe going from 35mm to 16mm. I do not use ETC at all, and there's a very light light vignetting.
I've streched it with Premiere in post production with the "transformation effect" with 50 scale height, it seems to be the good ratio (2x lens = 2.66:1 format). This ratio is like this because it's a 2X on a 16/9 720P. I'll try on the 4/3 VGA hacked GH1 next time, the ratio will be look more like a regular 2.66.

GH2 720P mode
Nostalgic mode
Berthiot anamorphic 2X lens
Fujian 35mm 1.7 C-mount lens always @ 1.7
Shutter speed from 1/50 to 1/4000
from 160 to 3200 ISO
Edited on Premiere CS5

Congrats on your first anamorphic experience! Not bad for 41 yo-yo's, I expected them to fetch higher. It's definitely for Super 8mm. I've seen Iscorama and Hypergonar variants.

always enjoy your lens adventures sebb. so the original footage is vertically stretched and you just squeeze it in post?

Thanks ed :) Do you know any pictures links on the web ?

Have you tried the MJPEG Anamorphic Hack here? I just got a Sankor 16c Anamorphic, but am waiting for some adapters to mount it on a lens. But the Sankor doesn't cover my 42mm. So I doubt it will cover the lovely Fujian.

I've just read that post http://www.personal-view.com/talks/...tch-for-mjpeg-vga-mode-in-ptool-3.55d#Item_10 is that what you are talking about. It seems that the benefit is a better squeeze done by the camera, but AVCHD seems having better rendering than old MJPEG.... What do you think ?

I have also posted on the Vimeo page.
Very nice clip as usual.
From my experience (and I think your clip confirms too) the focus through anamorphic lenses are not really sharp for apertures wider than f=5.6. Most of the time they come with a long focus distance (4m or so) so they are better adapted for shooting landscape under daylight conditions stopped down. However, put a quality diopter in the front and they become a secret weapon for close ups and shallow depth of field.
By contrast, anamorphots that come with a focus ring allow you to fine tune focus better and, most of the times, you can achieve tack sharp image even wide open.
Welcome to the world of anamorphics.
Widen your horizons! :)

I'm waiting for some adapters to attach a Sankor 2x anamorphic. Will try the Anamorphic hack. I'd like to check out the 720p @ 60. How is focusing? Do you adjust both lenses?

Apparently I just have to focus on the main lens, a C-mount Fujian 35mm 1.7, but this lens has focus problem, I just order another one on ebay. I just have hack my GH1 with the Anamorphic hack, I'm going to do some test ASAP. The look will be less stretched, because it will be on a 4/3 sequence, not on a 16/9e sequence with this 720P movie on the GH2.

Fujian is one of my favorite lenses. Had to build a crazy lens shade to block major flaring. Next is a direct follow focus with a speed crank.

Yes Fujian is a very good lens, especially for it's price, and it's perfect with my Berthiot Anamorphic 2X lens ! :)
