timelapser's, pclix LT intervalometer any good?

'bout to push buy on a d90. mostly buying it for 2nd angle stuff, timelapses and photos. i've been searching through a lot of different intervalometers and i came across this one.

https://www.pclix.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=1

seems easy to use, no hassles. i'm not looking to do any diy'n. don't have the time, knowledge and i need reliability.

the pclix unit with a cable for d90 is $185. doesn't seem too costly compared to other options; using a pda or laptop, etc..

so i'm wondering if any of the users on here have any experience with this unit.

thanks!

I own a Pclix and am very happy with it. It is sturdy and has the features you would expect from an intervalometer.

An example using the Pclix:

...reel also includes fidelity comparison between D90 video mode and single frame animation.

Hope this helps with your decision.

Any conclusions on the Intervalometer issue?

Any conclusions on the Intervalometer issue?

i'll grab up this $40 model then, thanks!

Hey did anyone (mangler?) finally get the $40 (YongNao) Intervalometer from ebay? Care to comment on it? Can you tell if it lacks anything compared to the Pclix (most important question of all)? Have you tried any HDR, do you know if there's any impediment for it on the YongNao? Really hope to hear from you on this, because I can't find a final assessment on the Pclix vs $40-bucks-from-ebay (YongNao) question anywhere (people buy theirs and disappear). And also, can anyone answer similar questions but in respect to the Aputure AP-TR3N? Does anyone have a Pclix x YongNao x Aputure sum up?

Thanks.

(If anyone else responds, please kindly note that I am not interested in software (laptop) related solutions, and if you direct to a DIY story please be one that has explanations from beginning till end, and for a D90, as there are everywhere these mentions to people who build theirs, (either with a 555 circuit, with a calculator, or with Arduino), but never really any comprehensive thorough approach for dummies).

I just jumped on the $40 ebay adapter... price was too good to pass up. I'll post my impressions of it once I get it (1-2 weeks to the US, they say) if manglerBMX or someone doesn't get to it first.

rallymatt, thanks for the tip! This looks like a great solution for time lapse on the D90.

Hey, well I'll wait for you to share your experience with it. What I really am looking forward to figuring out is if it's possible to do HDR (via bracketing) with the YongNao intervalometer.

yeah sorry, forgot about this thread. i bought the unit. it works exactly as it should. i've been working on a video story for my news paper involving some time lapses. i'll post the project when its done, the story runs in print may 17th i think? so sometime around then. i've still got a couple more to shoot. but its definitely an awesome unit.

Yeah, but what about bracketing?

Yeah, but what about bracketing?

Hey,

Thanks a lot for this feedback, but I REALLY want to know, are you able to do bracketing with it (for HDR) ? (that's my main concern). Because the D90 doesn't have an auto-bracketing function (besides using its own self-timer, which beats the purpose for time-lapse). So I suppose the unit must have like a single shot/three shots per burst mode, or a set-lenght shot... This is what I would really like to know about that YongNao piece.... (The thing is, I have this small experimental script that would really benefit from high dynamic range...)

I own a Pclix and am very happy with it. It is sturdy and has the features you would expect from an intervalometer. I've been experimenting with HDR timelapse and this is a possibility with the Pclix as it can hold the shutter for an extended time- this makes bracketing possible. I was also using a remote for timelapse which can be nice as well since you can become expressive with the timing of the shots.

An example of what I'm talking about:

...reel also includes fidelity comparison between D90 video mode and photo montage. There is one shot with the Pclix and HDR timelapse as well.

Hope this helps with your decision.

Wow,

Only now did I take a better look at Peter's vimeo link up there, it's a really good reel. This is often cited, but the "miniature" aspect achieved by wide shots + tilt/shifts is really intriguing. The use of HDR in Peter's reel is also great (despite the flickering). Although it's doing the opposite of something such as Bleach Bypass in terms of latitude and saturation, for me it achieves a similar dramatic effect. I'd love to see it used more, less as an experiment and more as a resource in a wider narrative context (which is what I'm trying to do and hope to post sometime in the next months).

In any case, if someone out there is interested in this too, I called Pclix today and in fact HDR is achieved with their unit through a "bulb" mode, like Peter was saying (I wrote some gibberish above about some 3 shot burst or something). Then I suppose the ebay/YongNao thing would be able to do it since it has an "exposure time" setting (in 1sec increments). And also, from what I gather, the main difference between the two seems to be the fact that the Pclix has a split-second mode for intervals, which the YongNao doesn't, and that the Pclix has the different Cables + IR options. On the other hand, the chinese guy seems to have a fancy LCD. In any case, I still await someone with the Ebay/YongNao/Chinese product to give some more feedback in terms of the HDR capabilities ... (and no one seems to know anything about the "Aputure" option).

P.S Just to be thorough about it, two more things about the Pclix I got from the phone call: the IR cable has a 15min interval limit with the D90 and it does not work well with bulb mode for HDR (I was checking if I could get it with the cheaper cable, without having to buy the expensive specific-for-D90 one...).

I know this thread has been dead for a while, but if anyone is still interested in seeing the Pclix + D90 at work, I have a film playing at VIFF you can check out. There will be three dates, and I'll be in attendance at the last two to answer any questions. Here is a link for more info:

(you might have to be patient for the page to come up- the site can be pretty slow at times)

Hope to see you there!
