Timelapse Part 8 - Traveling Without Moving

This is a timelapse shot using the Canon 5D2 in RAW stills mode with it sitting on top of a motion control system that Dynamic Perception built and was nice enough to have me beta test. A lot of the shots I used the Zeiss ZF 50mm f1.4 and the Canon 24mm f1.4 II. The Zeiss is crazy sharp and I love using it. Its very different to plan out shots that move and adds a whole new dimension to the process, not to mention setup time.

Here are also a couple pictures of my setup with the moco rig.

there are some really good shots in there. i love the lightpost for some reason. might be a few too many shots of traffic on the bridge though. was that one shot tracking out from behind the boulder at night? i could see the stars, so i thought maybe it was just an overexposed night shot

RAW mode? Do you actually apply some processing to the stills at the conversion stage, considering that all of them have to be converted with the same settings anyway? For card size reasons and maybe pure laziness I have set the camera to shoot small size mid quality JPEGs which need no further processing.

Big size stills are useful if pans, zooms or tilts are done inside the frames, otherwise shooting larger pictures than the video frame is just waste of card space and processing time.

Nice shots by the way, I have been using a pocket dolly quite a lot lately, but not for time lapse yet.

I find that capturing at the 5.6K resolution of the 5D2 for timelapse helps in the overall sharpness of the final 2K master I start with and with the 1080p versions I put online. Plus being able to adjust the frames in AE's Camera RAW helps a lot in processing. Also I'm future proofing all my footage by shooting in this RAW 5.6K format. Shooting with the compressed formats like Jpeg or sRAW can sometimes have some really big downsides. Like pixel binding and stuff like that.

I use quicktime for my time lapses. Do you know if it will use the raw files? If not how do you convert them to Jpeg? Also how do you know where the mily way will be in the sky?

Great Stuff. Wish I could shoot in locations like that.

Quicktime can't handle the RAW files. You would need to either convert them to jpeg in Photoshop, Lightroom or Aperture. I use After Effects to process all my frames which saves me a step. But if you don't want to do any of these methods you could always shoot jpeg but that has some drawbacks that I consider to be not worth it.

I find out where the Milky Way is going to be using a couple apps on my iPhone. Star Walk and Pocket Universe are really helpful. But when you keep doing it you just know where its going to come up and how it will move.
