timecode + shutter problem extr. urgent, shoot tomorrow

Hi all,

maybe someone can help me, i am shooting this week , today was the first shooting day and i got two problems
so its a bit of an emergency!

1. watched some of the footage, am shooting on the scene file F4
1/120 shutterspeed (contemporary dance film)

on a 60 min tape, 6 times suddenly the shutterspeed seems to have changed to slowmotion, this lasts for about 2 - 4 secs, then it continues normally
i was shooting from a tripod without touching the camera so i cant have pushed any buttons by accident

does this mean i need to run a cleaning tape or did any one encounter such play ups of this camera before?

what can i do? its really bad as it is dance i am filming, and this is really not meant to be in there

2. when i take my the tape out and put it back in, the timecode starts from 00.00.00 although the camera is set to regen

i did not have this before

a friend borrowed the camera last month for a shoot and he said he might have changed some settings.... i couldnt find any changes
am i missing something?
would it help to reset the user file settings to the factory settings?

i am very grateful for any advise or hints!

i got to shoot the next 6 days, starting at six in the morning, and got two long days behind me, so my brain might not be functioning so well anymore, reading the manual, am i missing something obvious?

many thanks in advance

timecode shutter problem news

timecode shutter problem news

hi all

just saw that about 20 people read my post, but none replied

are my questions perhaps unclear?

here is some more to the 2 problems...

1.

is my understanding of the regen timecode function is wrong?

as i understood it, in theory it should work like this:

if i shoot 30 mins on a tape, take this tape out, turn the camera off, turn it back on, put the tape back in, the timecode continues at 30 mins

is this right?

if i remember right this is how my camera always used to work until now...

2.
watched some footage of todays shoot, within 30 mins the shutter problem occured 6 times, it looks like slowmotion, once it lasted for 1 sec, the longest was 6 secs (!) most of the times 2 - 3 secs

it is the first time i shoot interlaced, the camera has 180 hrs on its heads, they have all been shot on progressive scan with the shutter turned off and seldomly at 1 / 25.

could this be the origin? like the camera is not used to record interlaced (know this some kind of methaphysical approach) ??

i really dont know what could be the cause... the heads? the shutter? the motor?
i am using the same panasonic tapes i have always been using, so this should not be the problem

anyone thinks my camera is broken?

thankful for any comments!!

On the shutter issue -- I doubt it's actually a shutter issue; I've never heard of that happening before and can't imagine how it would, but you can verify the shutter speed by turning on the "CAMERA DATA" menu option. That'll display the shutter speed (and aperture) that the footage was shot on.

It sounds to me like it's a case of a dropout or something happening. A head cleaning might fix it, if it's happening on playback only. Or if the dropout happened during recording it might be encoded in the tape which means that there's nothing you can do. Can you post a clip of the problem so we can see what it looks like?

As far as regen goes: regen will pick up the timecode from the tape at the last point that was recorded. But when you take a tape out, or power down and then power back up, the heads re-thread the tape and sometimes it doesn't start the tape at the exact same point that it left off at. You can usually force it to pick up the previous timecode by using the REC CHECK button; that'll rewind the tape for a couple of seconds and play back the last two seconds, and should (emphasis on "should") result in the system picking up the timecode from the last recording.

Or you could just switch to "preset" timecode; that way the next recording will always start with timecode that's equal to the last timecode recorded, regardless of whether you took the tape out, put a new one in, turned off and on, rewound the tape or whatever.

hi barry,

am ina big rush 5 .30 am...

but thank you very much!!!

i ll try the reck check and if it wont work the preset

wont be able to posta clip, am far away from my set up, just shooting

hope its not on the tape, and just playback
got to go

thanks!
