Timecode Jump Back

Hey All,

Have had something happen to us twice now during filming. We are shooting with timecode in record run mode, starting at a preset number, to give us continuous timecode throughout the project. Twice now, we have had our timecode jump back about 10 minutes. The position of the recorded footage does not change, just the timecode. The first time this happened when the battery died while recording, but the second time it happened while simply changing batteries.

What can be done to avoid this? And, if it should happen again, what is the best way to deal with it? Should we just reset the timecode to read the correct number again?

Thanks!

did you watch material from the tape during the shoot and then continued? i never watch footage in camera unless it is absolutely necessary. and even then i record 15 seconds of bars first and after i watched the part i wind somewhere into these 15 secs so the cam can pick up its TC again. or you even set a new preset from that position....

The easiest way to avoid jumps in your timecode is to use the rec chk function.

As soon as you have:
a) turned off the camera
b) switched battery
c) switched to VCR-mode to check a scene
d) rewinded/fast forwarded the tape

Before you shoot the next take press the "rec chk" button (located above the rec botton). This will make the camera back up 3 seconds and play them back for you to make sure the tape is at the correct position. While playing the camera will sync up with the old timecode and when you then press rec to record a new scene it will continue creating time code from the position it stopped when doing the rec chk.

Hope this helps!

Hi, I have had the same problem on my camera, I will check out to see if I even have that record check option (DVX 100A?) I don't remember seeing it, I will look when I get home from work. But yea, the timecode would jump back probably a half hour sometimes...everything is recorded, but the timecode jumps....What causes this to happen? Is this common? Is this something wrong with my camera? WHY? WHY? WHY? Really annoying.
