Timecode Break -- striped tape

Yikes, what a day. My second technical problem post.

I had striped a brand new Panasonic master tape, hoping to stave off those nasty timecode breaks that can come with a power off.

Ironically, after striping, a timecode break was created at the very end of the tape, prohibiting a rewind of the tape.

Any ideas?

Load the tape back in the DVX, make sure you have the TC set to ReGen-Record-Run, cue up to the end of the tape, last good frame of the last shot then put the camera in record mode and shoot black. Should lock up the TC but I don't understand why you are having problems to begin with.

BTW - Striping tapes is a waste of time as has been discussed many times here before. Some agree, some don't.

Thanks for the reply. Tomorrow, I will try reloading the tape again. And, double check for "Regen-Record-Run".

However, I leave it set Regen. And, unless the reloading again of the tape makes a difference, don't see how I can "cue up to the end of the tape" when I cannot rewind the tape at all, because of the timecode break. But, I will try your suggestion with a glimmer of hope. Also, tomorrow I can try rewinding the tape with a deck rather than the camera.

I don't know why I get timecode breaks, either. Panasonic swears that one should never get them with this camera -- not even powering off/on.

As for the striping, I normally do not do it (since even Panasonic claims it is not necessary). But, today, I expected to have to review footage in camera after takes, so thought that it would be a good precaution. Ironically, given that I had so many mysterious power-offs, this would have been the day that I needed the reliable TC.

I guess I misunderstood your original post a bit. I thought your NLE was having trouble controlling/rewinding the tape. Are you saying you cannot even rewind the tape manually while in VCR mode? If so, that doesn't have anything to do with a timecode break. Sounds like a tape transport problem. I didn't realize you were the same poster that had power/battery problems......

Yep, that is what I am saying...cannot rewind the tape in VCR mode in camera.

But, this is nothing new. Whenever a timecode break occurs on tape, the camera will not rewind/ff past it. I once got a timecode break on an edited master, when trying to capture the tape. I have complained about this to Panasonic, and their apathetic response is that this camera never creates timecode breaks.

I use only the best Panasonic tapes (master or pro), and only 1 pass. And, the camera is babied.

Panasonic has been perhaps the worst customer service with whom I have ever dealt. For pro gear, you can reach them only Mon - Fri. business hours. And, then, the so-called "tech support" cannot answer any questions. No one to help first-level troubleshoot. They just tell you to send your money-maker to the service center to wait for weeks, behind the many other DVX-100(A) awaiting repair. However, if you own a $200 Panasonic camera, you can get tech support 24/7.

There is certainly a problem with your camera. You should have no trouble at all rewinding or fast-forwarding past TC breaks. That's just odd. Do you have access to any other DV Cameras or decks? Any DV camera should be able to rewind past a TC break.

Agreed. Even my little Sony DCR-TRV19 will rewind/fast forward past a time code break. I've had it happen before on things I've recorded with the TRV19. Never had a problem like this with my DVX100A.

It *may* not rewind/forward past a break while playing, but it shouldn't have any trouble just moving the tape when it's not also playing the video.

AT least that's been my experience with cameras (not just the DVX).

Today after shooting a short I tried to transfer footage but the tape would only rewind to 7min 19seconds, the beginning of our second location. I transfered footage from that point onward. I tried to rewind the tape and transfer with a Pana GS-70. It still has not worked. My 100b has only 22 hours on it. I'm thinking something is wrong with that tape? I just fast forward the tape to see if it would rewind to the beginning. Nope, don't seem likely that both cameras would be tripping. Got to be this MQ tape.
