Time line says 960X720 aspect ratio is messed up

I capture HD video using HVX200 720P24. The video is transferred using the Firestore-100. I have FCP Studio 2

The HD 16X9 aspect ratio looks fine in the canvas and browser, but I noticed I am having aspect ratio issues when out putting to a Qucik time file. It always looks squeezed.

Then I noticed that in my timeline the Frame size is 960X720. Shouldn't it be 1280X720?

Isn't that what 720P is? Even my still images are squeezed. Not sure why?

DVCPRO HD in 720p is 960x720 in non-square pixels. 1080 is the same (1280x1080 in non-aquare pixels). In your viewer and in FCP it looks fine, but when you export, you have to set the output to 1280x720 in square pixels (proper 720p). You can easily do this in compressor in the geometry tab.

Joe,

Thanks that's a big help. I was also wondering why the frame rate is 59.94 even though I shot 720p24?

One last question on this: Does it matter what the sequence settings are? I usually just allow FCP to set it when I first enter a clip, and I get the box that the settings must match. I just click OK.

But I noticed that some sequences have a time line of 1440X1080 and a compressor of HDV1080i60. But some of my sequences have a frame rate of 960X720 and a compressor of DVC PRO HD 720p60. Same footage captured with the same camera and settings.

Totally confusing.

It depends which mode you shot it in.

If you shot 24p or 24pA, the actual frame rate is 60i until the pull-down is removed.

If you shot 24pN, then FCP is displaying the frame rate incorrectly.

Yep. 24p uses 3:2 Pulldown, 24pA uses Advanced Pulldown, which means unless you remove pulldown, you end up with a 60i file and/or timeline. 24pN records the native 24p with no pulldown. I recommend using that since it takes a step out of the post production process.

What camera are you using? If we know what the original recording format is, then we can help you find out what the issue is. If its a Panasonic camera recording to P2 (like an HPX170 or HVX200 that records DVCPRO HD), then it should be in the camera's original recording format. So if you shot DVCPRO HD 720p24, then you should allow FCP to set the sequence settings, and just double check that it says DVCPRO HD 720p24. HDV is very different in terms of aspect ratio and compression, so using the wrong one will really hurt the quality of your footage.

What exact version of FCP are you using?

And are you creating sequences using the Easy Set Up presets?

Finally, if you are log and transferring the p2 data, what preferences for removing pulldown are you setting in L/T when ingesting what footage?

I am using the HVX200AP. I don't have P2 cards. I shoot directly into the FS-100 DTE recorder.

Since some of my sequences have different settings, can I simply change all of the settings to read DVCPRO HD 24? ...or do I need to delete the HDV sequences and begin new?

What happens if I have clips that were shot using Canon's HVVIXIA HV30, HDV and some DVCPRO HD 720p24? What should the sequence settings be with a mixture of clips?

THANKS for all of your help. This is really confusing.

If your using the FCP Easy setup, it should render each clip after effects (like after color correction it needs to create a new clip with the effects added), then FCP should render in the proper format, so it will render DVCPRO HD as DVCPRO HD and HDV as HDV. This all only matters on export, where you choose your video size (1080 or 720). Make sure to set it as square pixels if you use 720 or 1080. If you forget, it will warp the HDV footage to DVCPRO HD (if you worked on a DVCPRO HD timeline) or DVCPRO HD to HDV (if you worked on an HDV timeline).

David,

The version of FCP is FCP studio 2

I think I was using easy set-up. Not sure why I have two different sequences settings all from the same interview.

Your third question may be key. I don't have P2. I am using the firestore-100 vs.4

Do I have to select what pulldown occurs? If so, how?

I shot it 24p which gets transferred to 59.94 frames/second over the firewire connection to the Fire-store.

. Am I supposed to manipulate the pulldown to get it back to 24P?

If you have the latest Firestore firmware, you should be able to record actual 720p23.976, but you have to have the HVX200 in regular 720p24, and set the Firestore to PN mode.

The Firestore will remove the pull-down, and leave you with actual 24pN clips.
