Time Lapses - The death of a GH1?

Actually, I believe it is possible (with or without the hack). Basically you shoot in full manual mode with manual focus. So just to be clear:
1> Turn dial to Creative Movie Mode
2> Select "M" in the little pop up menu at the bottom left that looks like a movie camera.
3> Turn focus dial to "MF" (Manual Focus).
That enables you to take either AVCHD or MJPEG footage at a number of shutter speeds between 1/2 and 1/30.

There are lots of threads on the subject in this forum but I can't seem to find any of them right now.

Unfortunately you are a bit wrong. You can do the above trick on an unhacked gh1 but only for mpeg. That is a problem because you are stuck with 720p. If you use the hack to modify MPEG settings then recording bellow 1/30 inevitably crashes. I have tried after having exactly the same concerns about wearing out my camera. I also posted a question on the hacked gh1 forum but no reply. I had been experimenting with the anamorphic MPEG settings and it always crashes below 1/30. If anyone knows how have a hacked MPEG shoot under 1/30 let me know.

Well, I tried it now. It works on MJPEG only and not on AVCHD.
Mine is Hacked, but haven't much tweaked the MJPEG.
I shot 20 mins of 2fps MJPEG with 1/4 shutter speed. No Problem!

Thanks Shawn, this is the first time I am shooting on MJPEG, I always shot AVCHD.
Now my GH1 can do many more things than I thought. :)

OK, now only problem is the Audio. If it's possible to record Video without Audio, the filesize will be much less.
Vitalie, please confirm if this is possible. Thnx!

By "haven't tweaked much" do you mean you have changed nothing in the MPEG settings or that you have changed something minor? If you have changed something and it's still working let us know what it is - i'd love to know what works.
I haven't tried changing the MPEG fps in ptool and testing it with, let's say, the anamorphic patch but i will the first chance I get and I'll report back.
For those who have tried it - what does it do actually? How is it different from changing shutter speed to 1/2 for example? Do I have to match shutter speed with fps for this to work?

Actually I don't have any experience of MJPEG, in ptool I selected all the options in MJPEG Compression
and changed values of all Table Settings to 100. (as it says lower the better) I haven't changed Quality settings.

Don't know if that's major or minor, I haven't even figured out how to increase the Quality of MJPEG, with what settings I mean.

I stand corrected. :) I just realized I haven't tried this when my GH1 has been hacked (it is currently "un-hacked" for a project that I needed 100% stability and didn't need super high quality).

Thanks for correcting me.

Well, I was wrong too :) I guess there is a way to do it with modified MPEG settings (as exttrem showed) but the exact procedure is lost to me. It seems exttrem's modified mpeg quality settings didn't bother the GH1 and it didn't crash as it went under 1/30 shutter speed (not the case with me). Also from what I understand he/she didn't use the ptool frame rate switch to adjust to a lower fps.
So it seems there are two ways to do this:
1. Through some mildly modified mpeg settings
2. Via the ptool frame rate setting.

I am assuming that if we use 1. then the higher the quality the higher the chance of the camera freezing. I have mine setup with the anamorphic settings which top at 55Mbps. I guess trying somewhere around 30Mbps might work (and you'll have 1080p MPEG). If I get the chance to try it out I will report back.

As I said before, I shot 2fps, that means I patched the framerate to 2fps in MJPEG.
Don't knw if it would work on another patch like Anamorphic, etc.

Anyone look into the extended warranties. Maybe someone covers this.

If so, maybe I shouldn't have gone gray market for my GH1.

I haven't thought about that. So perhaps if you have a 3 year warranty and the camera dies within 2 years from reaching shutter actuation limit then it might be replaced for free? I wonder if anything about number of shutter actuations is included in the contract for these extended warranties.. hmm... And I wonder if the GH1 would be replaced by a GH2 or a GH1 that can't be hacked.. hmmm.. :)

I think you may be wrong about the AVCHD footage as well. :) I just took 1/2 shutter speed footage 720p AVCHD with no issues. Perhaps its the hacked AVCHD that you are referring to?

Wow. You are right! I have hacked AVCHD settings and it worked for about 10 secs on 720p (SH) setting (then it gave me the speed error, but at least it's not like with the MPEG where it crashes immediately). Can you try the 1080p on your unhacked avchd?

What was your shutter speed then?
As I said...

Well that's me, because I didn't bother to jump to 720p. I never shoot 720p... :Drogar-Smoke(DBG):
Thanks for the Info... :) I am trying it out.

I did some testing and it does appear that the lowest possible shutter speed with 1080p AVCHD is indeed 1/30 (on both Hacked and UnHacked GH1s). I wonder why it is possible with 720p and not 1080p? Curious. I am also guessing this has been discussed at length in other threads.
