Time-lapse

I want to shoot a time lapse, but i am not impressed if i speed up the video from my GH1. Today I tried to do a time-lapse my taking pictures. I set the burst rate to slow, and put my camera on a tripod. I taped the shutter down and left it to take the pictures. I was very happy with the results, and the video seemed fluid. Could i do this for my time-lapses, and not have to buy an intervolometer? Another thing that i am concerned about is straining the shutter. It sounds loud, and I fear that i am doing damage. It seems fine because an intervolometer does the same thing. Im worried that I am going to damage my GH1 by doing this.

The way you are doing it gives you little control over your framerate. I'm unsure how many frames per second the camera takes in show burst, but with an intervalometer you can slow it down much more. Think 1 picture every 30 or 60 seconds. The intervalometer is going to give you a lot more control and a lot more reliability. How frustrating would it be to return to your camera only to find that the tape had let up a little, and the camera had not been taking pictures.

With intervalometers going for under $50 on eBay, I would just go that route. You could potentially save a few pennies by doing it the way you are proposing here, but ultimately at what cost?

The challenge is to find one that takes more than 99 exposures. I ordered one that advertised 399; however, its limit is really 99. Url for an unlimited or high number of exposures?

The JJC timer does unlimited. The numbers go up to 399 - unlimited is one step below that and indicated by "--". Do an e-bay search to find the best deal. Paid $46 for mine.

all the ones ive seen state unlimited aswell as up to 399 or 99hrs.

i wanna get the phottix which is exactly the same as the delmax but would like to know if the canon jack is the same as the panasonic one. they look the same.

I was just recently doing a timelapse with my GH1, posted it on vimeo:

My "poor man's solution":
I was using photo mode (16:9, medium quality setting - no need for higher resolution as it is going to be scaled down for video anyway), set the camera to 2 sec. self timer (to prevent disturbing the cam by pressing the button), manual focus, aperture priority and shot a picture every 10 seconds. This way you can do as many as you want without an intervalometer. Make shure the cam sits rock solid (e.g. on a tripod).

Gives good results in my opinion - but judge yourself using the above link.

best regards, Gunther
