Time for a change ?

Hi All,

I am seriously debating whether to sell my EX1 set-up and go for the Canon XF305 ... I shoot wildlife mainly but will hopefully be moving into other sectors in the new year ... The thought of Broadcast 50Mbps 4:2:2 colour space and more zoom etc is pretty compelling. I also edit on FCP however I also looking at now going for Abobe Cs5.5 any thoughts

Anyone prepared to change my mind :undecided

Hmmm ... Looks like the EX1 is for the chop!!!

That or I may just wait for Sony's answer to the Canon XF series ... EX7 broadcast camera with interchangable lens or even a decent 20x zoom for around £5-6K... I can but dream

Dean, this is a tough situation. It really depends upon your shooting needs and if you have an EX-1 or EX-1r. I just moved from an EX-1 to the XF-300 and I think it is a great move. But it depends on what you want/need.

The XF-300 has a better lens and you can hand hold it! The EX-1 is better in light gathering (especially in 1080p). The servo motor for the XF-300 is a lot better and soft landings and starts are more of a reality with a rear zoom controller. I like the image better from the XF-300. The EX-1 always looked painted on to my eyes, especially with skin tones. Both have extensive menu image controls but I can dial in the XF-300 to a better finished result.

I shoot a lot in 720p60 and it looks great but I have seen some aliasing which I am in communucation with Canon about. Hopefully they can remedy the issue.

But, I could not sell my EX-1 for the amount I wanted to be prepared to take a hit! Maybe find a used XF-300 to soften the blow.

Overall, I am very happy outside of wanting another 1/2 to a full stop of light at 0db at times.

Cheers Bassman ... I am going to research my options over the xmas period and then decide. I'm real happy with the EX1 but I just wanted that something more in the reach (i know you can buy convertors for both) and especially the Broadcast capability ...

Thanks again

if i didnt already own an EX1 i would go for the XF300 but no way would i take a hit by selling my EX1 at this point. i really like the reach of the Canon lens. other things are appealing as well but i dont think the end result would be overly noticable to your average client/

The camera you should be looking at for wildlife is the EX3. You get a better viewfinder and the ability to change lenses. A good Nikon telephoto lens will allow you to get shots you could never get with the EX1 or XF305.
I have owned an EX1, EX3, and XF305, and there's no doubt that the EX3 is the best camera overall.

Cheers for the replies

I am holding on to my EX1 although now i'm tempted by the FS100 ... The 'Broadcast quality' of the XF305 still looks appealing ... Damn all this choice :Drogar-Sick(DBG):

I happen to own both a EX1 (and an FS100, and for me, there's no question about which camera I would keep if I had to give one of them up: The EX1. Overall, the EX1 is a superior camera in all the ways the matter the most to me, and once you've been spoiled by the great XDCAM workflow, it is hard to go take a step down to NXCAM. The FS100 is essentially a NX5 with a big sensor, while the EX1 is essentially a F3 with a smaller sensor. If you're also toying with the idea of an XF305 (that only has a 1/3" sensor) then obviously sensor size is not important to you anyway -- so look at all the other stuff you'd lose with an FS100 vs. EX1.

For some people the FS100 might be the better choice, but I'm just suggesting you really do your homework on what you'd be giving up before moving from an EX1 to an FS100. For me it would be a huge mistake.

I think you should hold onto your EX. It's a great camera, still very much in use (especially with the addition of a Nano Flash). Save up and add-on an F3 if you feel like you need a larger sensor camera.

And it's not worth it to take the financial hit to "upgrade" to an XF300/305.

Cheers again guys... Its great to see more passionate EX1 users out there ... I am going to hold on to my Ex1 for a little while and weigh up the pros and cons

The nano/lexus set up looks pretty enticing for future consideration. I may also, in the meantime, just purchase a DSLR (60D or 7D) for the Shallow DOF stuff ...

I just sold my six month old F3 and was able to buy another EX3 and a 320K and a nanoflash with the proceeds from all I had to buy to get an F3 up and running almost like a video camera. ;) Lets just say it was a learning experience. The F3 and the C300's desperately need an affordable and fast servo zoom option---primes just don't cut it for ENG shooters. I already have an EX3 and an EX1R so I know how easy it is to light for shallow depth of field (add ND, open iris, etc), and I've noticed a dramatic increase in demand for the EX3 in the last 6 months and into this year, bookings are over the top, I needed more to meet the demand. I think a lot of shooters understand and appreciate the EX3 even more now. Seriously, shooting 800 ISO @ 1.8 is Not All That anymore. ;)
