HPX250: Time codes for HPX250 and Sound Devices 702T recorder

Gentlemen,

Need some expertise from you folks. I have a HPX250 (which have TC input & output). I have also a Sound Devices 722 audio recorder. The 722 does not have TC input / output. I am wondering if anybody have experience with HPX250 talking to 702T (which has TC) or the 744T or 788T? Any problems?

Thanks.

I'm confused do you have the 702T? the 722?, 744T,788T? If you have any of the Sound devices products with the T designation it will have timecode outs, which will be either BNC or lemo connections. If you have a non "T" designated recorder it will still except timecode into the device but will not output one. You can use the HPX250 as your master clock to sync a non 'T" model. Be aware the cameras sync is not as accurate as the crystal sync within the recorder and you may have to sync more often. In my experience the HPX holds sync pretty well in my tests, historically camera sync has never been as accurate as a timecode generator or crystal sync generator within a recorder.

Hope this helps ;-)

I've actually found the opposite to be true. I've used half a dozen or more DV cameras over the years from different manufacturers, and they all hold sync perfectly fine with each other, even for an hour's worth of tape. But I can't find one single audio recorder that can hold sync with any DV camera. They all drift, and by varying amounts.

Thank you. I didn't know the 722 will accept a Timecode input from my HPX250. I need to read the manual of my 722 then.

I have read the manual (a few times now) - Have a question. Is the Word Clock Input and Output ports the same as Timecode?

Actually, there is a crystal in most video cameras. My HPX500 has one, as do my other cameras. But. most don't have ovens to keep the temperture stable. I often Plug a BNC cable to the input of the T.C. BNC of the other camera and start locking the T.C. in free mode. Works pretty good, But, if you need tight sync, you need to Genlock the cameras, which many cameras don't have. That takes the leading edge of the video frame of the master camera, sync generator, ,,,and after plugging into the BNC genlock input of the slave cameras, they then lock to that leading edge, ,,, with T.C. also locking to the edge.

Gentlemen,

Kindly read the reply from Sound Devices ....

Thanks for contacting us. The 722 has no timecode functionality what so ever. The is no way to either input or output timecode.

The 702T does support timecode but you will need a BNC (in and out) to 5-pin LEMO cable. This cable is called the XL-LB2 and can be purchased through your local Sound Devices dealer. Provided is a link to all the timecode cables we offer: http://sounddevices.com/products/accessories.htm#timecode-cables

If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me. Thanks.
