Does anyone know of a way to jam sync two 100A's time codes? I don't think this is a feature of this camera(or any other mini dv for that matter) but I thought I'd ask anyways.
I do multi-camera shoot and this would help when editing.
Use the remote control to synchronize the cameras. Here’s the steps:
a) Set all of the cameras side by side and turn them on.
b) With one remote control, push “MENU”
c) Select “5. RECORDING SETUP” push the RIGHT arrow
d) Scroll down to “TC PRESET” and select.
e) Set the timecode to 01:00:00:00 or any other starting code.
f) Press MENU – then select “YES”
g) Press MENU twice to exit the setup.
h) The free running timecode should now be in sync across all of the cameras.
The TC will continue to free run even when the camera is shut off and the battery is removed.
So you mean the little remote control in my bag can control someone elses camera... interesting. So that means its possible to screw with someone elses camera on a shoot. Kind of scary if you think about it. I think im going to go disable the remote in the menu just in case.
I had to do that any way. I was doing an exterior shoot and my zoom would start all by itself. I finally figuerd out it was the bounse light from a white fince that was doing it. 8)
Boo, Thanks! Oh I get it. Start them up then move the cameras to there positions. Just don't stop recording on any camera. Or is this where this free running time code comes into play? How does that work if you do not have tape going ?
Well, I don't know if that's phrased quite accurately. Did you mean to say "consistent" instead of "continuous"?
Free run means that the timecode constantly advances, regardless of whether the tape is running or not. It's tied to the internal clock of the DVX, so when you set "free run", the time code matches the clock. Rec Run means that the timecode only advances as the tape is moving, Free Run means that timecode advances whether the tape is moving or not.
What you can use this for is to sync the DVX's to be the exact same time code, regardless of whether the camera operators pause or re-start their cameras. If you set the TCG to "free run", and set First Rec TC to Preset, and then set the preset to 0:0:0:0 on all the cameras, and then use the same remote control to simultaneously store that preset value, then all cameras will from that moment on have identical timecode, whether they're running or not, whether they're changing tapes or not, even if the camera is turned off the timecode still advances at the same rate as the clock.
Well, it's in the manual, of course, and all you have to do is experiment a little with it to see how useful it can be. I leave the camera in Rec Run 99% of the time, but for a multi-camera shoot it looks very handy...
Hi there,
i use this for stand alone sound.
I have a couple of portable minidisc recorders capable of extended recording in mono.
In stead of using radio mics i simply mic up each person with a lav and a MD recorder, set the DVX to free run then start the camera and recorders off at the same time.
This works great up to the limit of the minidisks, soon to be replaced by Himd capable of recording computer WAV files.
The footage can be edited in premiere and once the shots to be used have been identified finding the correct segment of audio from the continuous audio track is as easy as reading the timings off the timeline.
This is also a useful technique if on the run recording is necessary with a soundman and boom no longer needing to be connected.
FOr those time when synching is going to be difficult i have a small box i constructed containing a Peizo Buzzer and a bright led.
Holding the box in front of the lens and pressing the button on my box illuminates the led and sounds the buzzer giving me a nice synch mark on the tape, and is easily picked up by any mics in the area.
