Time Code Triggers to Activate External Recorders

On this coming Thursday I’m meeting with a Panasonic Rep and local Dealer to attempt to match my AG-DVX200 to one of my GH4’s. I had in mind that I would bring my Video Devices PIX-E5 to record our tests, but much to my surprise the AG-DVX200 doesn’t want to trigger the PIX-E5. I called Video Devices and for more than an hour we tried everything we could think of but were not able to make the PIX-E5 record using the cameras record button. It seems that record triggers are not present in the AG-DVX200, at least in the Firmware in my camera version 1.52. Am I missing something or did Panasonic not include record triggers in the AG-DVX200?

Your comments will be appreciated.

Did you have media in the camera? Were you trying to trigger in 4K 10-bit, where the camera does not record internally?

I discovered the same issue. The DVX200 only wants to send out a trigger when it is also recording to internal media. In modes where it does record to internal media (and that media is present), the camera does in fact send out a trigger that the Odyssey7Q+ can detect both over SDI and HDMI. I can't speak for your recorder.

I found the solution to (Record Triggers in the AG-DVX200) refer to page 168 in Volume 2 Manual and turn on the Remote Record Link, life is good again.

Remote Record Link is necessary if you want to record to both internal and external media.

If you want to record only externally, leave Remote Record Link turned off, and instead assign AUTO REC to a user button. It operates as an independent record button, instead of using the camera's red record button you'd use the AUTO REC user button and it will send the record flag out the HDMI or SDI port.

Hi Barry,

Thanks for the tip about assigning Auto Record to a users button for external only recording and all the other information you’ve been kind enough to share with us.

Back at the beginning of this thread I explained that we would be making tests with a Panasonic Rep and local Dealer to see if we could match the AG-DVX200 to the GH4. With that in mind, the tests we’ll be making tomorrow will probably include the scene files you created for the AG-DVX200 to match the GH4. If you happen to see this posting, do you also think we should try the “Like GH4” scene file that is available from Panasonic?

Were making these tests, to prepare for a May 25th meeting of our newly formed Tampa Bay Panasonic Camera Users Group, at which time we’ll try to show our members the best way to match their AG-DVX200 to their GH4’s. If you have any tips on making these tests your advice will be appreciated.

I believe that my scene files will do a good job of matching the GH4, yes, but they are limited by the restrictions of the original 1.4 palette. If the Like GH4 scene file works for you, it works with the better "Natural" color processing. But it also only matches one GH4 profile (I think it's meant to emulate "standard" but I'm not sure); if someone wants to emulate one of the other profiles, obviously I'd suggest trying mine. Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

Thanks Barry, I'll pass your comments on to Wes Carr our Panasonic Rep and also let you know how the tests turn out.

Barry,

What is the firmware history on the AG-DVX200 and at what firmware version did the better “Natural processing kick in?

Barry Greens Scene file emulating the GH4 is a very good stating point. But possibly you have to do a bit fine tuning.
I have had a similar problem matching my DVX (firmw.1.65) with the AG130A. In comparison the DVX was a bit orange and not red as the AG130. Moreover the footage looks a bit milky. Was not as crisp as the AG130. So we make a set up with a standard color card and a dual channel Vectorsscope. Bot cam's look at the same time onto the test chart and you see easily the difference on the Vectorsscope. A little adjustment of the color matrix of the scene file, phase and amplitude, and finally both cams looks same!
Good luck!

There have been many versions of firmware; version 1.09 had the first significant change to color, but the big change was with Version 1.51, which had the new "Natural" palette in it. The current firmware is 1.65 I think.

Barry,

You asked that I let everyone know how our tests to match the DVX200 to the GH4 turned out……….here goes.

Our preliminary tests went well; we set up our DVX200 and a GH4 on tripods, Focused on the same subject and used a Panasonic Broadcast Monitor to evaluate the results. Wes Carr from Panasonic installed the latest firmware in our DVX200 and also installed your, Barry Greens GH4 Scene Files; to use Barry’s Scene Files you to also need to go into the Menu, locate Other Functions and then highlight Color Tone and select Version 1.4 as Barry’s files were created using the Version 1.4 palette.

Wes also installed the Like GH4 Scene File from Panasonic; it replaced our cameras Scene 4 in Firmware Version 1.65 and uses the Color Tone Natural palette. Although we were able to get very good results using both Barry’s Scene Files and The Panasonic Like GH4 Scene File we will probably stick with Panasonic’s Like GH4 Scene File and take advantage of the improved Natural Palette.

BTW this is only my best recollection of what we accomplished and if your planning on adding new Firmware or Scene Files have someone with experience help you.
