Tim Dashwood's Fs700 + O7Q tests

It's a great review. He offers the DNG for download and what's interesting is I can see all 17 steps. Now i don't think anyone for one moment is suggesting there are 17 stops available through RAW. So either the wedges he is using aren't quite single stops or the output of the camera is very non-linear in the shadows or a combination of both.

I've spent several days/weeks running range tests which i'll publish as soon as i can do them justice, but i've still go some more R&D and investigation to do first!

cheers
Paul

17 Stops! Who needs the Dragon? :)

I can believe 14 stops though (maybe more like 13+ Useable), because even on Art Adam's FS700 RAW tests, you could see 14 stops and even the very faint beginnings of 15.

I could have sworn Mitch mentioned 14 stops at one point. I'm pretty sure CD has shot some charts here and there. Whatever it is, it's good enough for me at this point. I did notice as Paul did, that when you mess with the Photoshop sliders, it can get really flat.

Sony's published spec on the FS700 is 14+ stops, and I have tested this on a proper DCS backlit exposure wedge chart. I would question Tim's homemade chart with the strips of gel. I don't know how accurate the density of that is, especially once you pile on the layers. I'm sure it also shifted the colors a bit, which will effect one channel more than the others in RGB, also skewwing the exposure sensitivity test. But all in all a nicely done review.

That's an important and overlooked point with dynamic range - each colour channel has a very different sensitivity and the real range is a combination of all channels, in some cases clever debayering will recover highlights from a clipped channel using another one at the expensive of colour fidelity.
