Tilted Windows, Episode 1: The Device

New to the forum, not new to the DVX100. I'm the General Manager of Beecon, the student television station over here at the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Anyway, the first episode of our first original series is out, and the second/third are in post production.

I'll be posting my roughcut of Episode 3 somtime soon, to get feedback/etc, so I decided to link to the completed Episode 1.

You'll need Flash 8, not 7, to watch the video. FLV8 rocks.

I dunno man. My browser says I have Flash 8, but then I get nothing in the pop-up.

I am interested in web-based series, and am doing one of my own. So I would love to see what you guys have.

But, I dunno, maybe my Flash is lame or something.

nice! the credits intro is fantastic!
i've got the same problem with flash. i've finished a music video yesterday and put it on a web page in flv format and some people can't see the video (they just have a black window). i don't know why .... i will put a real player version too. maybe it's the way to go.

Ah now it seems to be working. I would suggest though, making it available in many more formats. Though I personally avoid real player like the plague.

Hey! That's my bike!!!! :)

You looking for feedback on the piece? I think it's pretty cool that you guys are doing something like this. I started working on my shorts as a sort of series too, largely so I would have somehing to shoot like every month. But I think it's way cool that a college is doing this.

Feedback is good - not necessarily for Episode 1, as that one is in the can, but in general, I learn as I do each project. I"ll be posting a link to Episode 3 sometime soon (someone else directed episode 2, though I wrote it), and I'll definitely want feedback on that. Particulary since I'm still in the editing/color correcting phase.

With Episode 1, I'm just sort of showing it off and whatnot, getting general consensus, and issues you see so that I can try and avoid in future episodes. My skills as a director have increased since I shot this last quarter. It's weird watching the progression of yourself as a filmmaker :p

i was wondering about that show. Are you guys still shooting this week during break? Just wondering since the cage is shutting down today.

Hey Avenger, who are you?

And no, we're not shooting during break. Kate Heckman and Evan Watkins will be co-directing Episode 4 starting next quarter, with Verlon Allen and myself DPing most likely. I'll be writing the next few episodes over the break.

Post-production work for Episode 3 will continue, with color correction and editing tweaks, however.

im jason. ill be working for the cage next quarter. Do you guys have open positions on the shoot? If your looking for someone with some dvx experience ill likely be able to lend a hand. You probably wont need them, but I have a few dvxs of my own available also. Episode One looked great. Hope things go well for you in post.

It was an interesting story. The lead actor was good, he reminded me of Ben Stiller. Framing, for the most part, was very good.

This short is in dire need of color correction. The inconsistency between shots is jarring. The editing could be much more efficient also. It felt like you lingered on shots too long. The point could be conveyed in shorter cuts. I didn't listen to the sound critically so I have no comments on that.

Otherwise, good effort.

Wow! Looks great! Some of the best 24p footage I've seen.

Great looking footage.

I'm actually in the process of doing somewhat of the same thing right now. I'm in preproduction for a ten episode drama for my campus television station, apparently something that no one has attempted here before. I'd love to be able to pick your brain on how you went about some things, as I'm fumbling blindly with my show.

How did you go about getting actors? Were they people from a drama department? Or just regular students?

How did you secure locations? Does your show need to be sponsored to go on air? And if so, did you try to work in shooting rights in the sponsorship deal.

Any answers you could give me would be most appreciated. It's cool to see someone else doing what I'm trying to do, gives me a little bit of hope!

Thanks, -Jon

I probably wouldn't use the filtration (pro mist?), or at least go with a lighter grade, and definitely none on wide shots. The black levels were very inconsistent, and the footage could use more "punch" (contrast and saturation) overall. But this is easy to do in post if you keep your levels in check when you shoot. Acting was pretty good. Loved the titles, like someone else said. Could move the camera more. You might also try using the long end of the lens at a low f-stop to reduce the depth of field that gives away that "video" look. A series like this will give you a great opportunity to measuer your improvement over time. Keep it up!
