TikTok is now the most popular website

lol, news broadcasts are designed to keep viewers around for ratings so they are doing their jobs if you're sticking around. But it is frustrating at times because they keep mentioning something you might want to see/hear about and might not get around to it until after the 2nd/3rd commercial break.

But, in general, similar criticisms can be made about reading; the type of words used, syntax, reader's understanding of what he or she is writing about, the length of the writing, the writer's picture might strike a chord, the website, the surrounding advertisements, all factors for an 'emotions' or bias argument.

Both types of presentations have a place.

Vertical video is irrational

I can hold my phone in a comfortble manner vertically

outfits are a vertical thing.. people love fashion and outfits

vertical video is entirely rashional in its place.

What distinguishes tiktok isn't vertical video, which you can find on many platforms. It's the algorithm and the specific language that has evolved around the platform

Yeah, for real - but on a related note, what isn't a data harvesting tool anymore.

We get notifications and briefed on what company policies are and aren't, but how much does it matter? 99% of us can't prove what is or isn't going on.

IMO, you have to be without any electronics on your body somewhere underground or high on mountains to not be tracked or at least curiously browsed by someone or something these days.

i was only reacting to “verticalvvideo is irrational”

Gotcha. Yeah, it's not irrational. It's just not conducive to the vast majority of Subject matter I shoot, where the items anf peoppe of interest are spread along a horizontal plane. I often end up with absurd amounts of headroom (and legroom?) When doing wides for vertical

The issue they have isn't the harvesting but the harvester. Notice that people like that always say "the Chinese community oarty" and not just "china" lol

i mean, i'm def on board with the USA being mindful of it because they should be. doesn't mean i want it down but there should be a decent effort going into monitoring TikTok and anything with a lot of power and control over Americans.

I love Autocorrect. Even when it's writing, "I'm comin' up, so you better get this oarty started".

And, technically speaking, CCP is doing what every tracker is doing. An example, an ex-female friend of mine is going for a thyroid removal surgery soon. So I felt I had to look up the medical facts on the subject. Now I am getting ads for menopause.

And the Chinese and the Russian sourced apps will also install spy programs. On top of the ads on the menopause.

the americans would never spy on foreign (or domestic) citizens ;) ;)

all about power rather than principle, really. nevertheless

lol, yeah - I think anyone with the most and best technology will behave the worst...no one ever in the history of civilization said, "Let's not use all of this stuff in ways we shouldn't be."

was scanning a political anti TikTok video clip just now .. the narrator/host with the anti-Chinese sentiments shows photos of the ex-big shots from both political parties lobbying on its behalf ... I am not a programmer but I wonder if stripping the TT software down can eliminate the potential spying bits ...

Might it more be an issue of database access? Every social network has tons of valuable data on people but Xi's not reading my Twitter DMs

So, maybe not so much that the software spies on you more than any of the others as that the data might be accessible to an adversarial regime?

My presumption based on reading the tea leaves is that Ticktock or any downloaded app from a questionable source can include anything from trackers to rootkits to spyware. And it can lay dormant for an undetermined amount of time and activated either remotely or conditionally (i.e., based on certain factors such as access to governments, military manufacturers, etc.) In retrospect, Putin's Cozy Bear and Fancy Bear hacker groups got very little out of the US ... that we know of. China, on the other hand, has been very silent about any information it has obtained via its cyber spies.

But then, stuff like this comes out and PRC goes to work on a diplomatic solution behind the scenes.

While Xi tells Trudeau to shut his pie hole.

PS. Rishi Sunak came out and asserted that the UK will be no more Mr. Nice Guy with China either. Olaf Scholz had some not-so-nice things to say too. Italy's new premier is more nationalistic period. And Xi is beginning to backtrack a little. US alone is one thing but the EU/UK see another Putin potential with China and are trying to nip that in the bud.

The good thing about tik-tok and foreign hackers is that they probably believe the world outside their country really is like tik-tok suggests - i.e. full of idiots with goldfish memories, little talent and huge egos to match their teenage attitudes - as in, a micro-strand of society with a loud voice and thankfully, little power.

I don't know, that's harsh and radiates negativity.

Social media is outrageous, no doubt - but what does one expect? Humans are able to record themselves and share these recordings around the world. The results are natural.

And many of these kids have more technical talent at 15 than most of us had at 30. They are writing, filming, editing, marketing, producing all of their own content and building a savings account before they're able to drive.

So I personally wouldn't describe them like that at all besides maybe agreeing about egos, but acknowledging huge egos isn't anything noteworthy. We've had world wars because of huge egos. It's only now more prevalent because we're able to showcase these egos, within seconds, to more witnesses.

OTOH most of the world feels the same about Google, Facebook, twitter, instargram etc and the USA. IE they trust the USA about as much as they trust Russia or China.
