Does anyone has opinion about Tiffen Variable ND vs FS700 build in filters?
Which one has better optical quality and makes less noise? (maybe there is better company than Tiffen)

the question i would aks: why hassle with external ND filters while internal ones are so convenient.

Here is an in depth thread on Variables VS Internal ND's

My short hand answer would be, for Cinema / Broadcast Commercial applications, use a Mattebox with proper ND filters for best quality and options. Professional DP's rarely use Internal or Variable ND's

For Documenatry / Digital Content / Reality / Coroporate / Sports. Rock the Internal ND's. The quality difference is miniscule compared to the convenience.

But this is also due to the fact that most professional Cinema Cameras e.g. Alex, Red , don't even have internal ND Filters.

The ALEXA LT line has built in ND's. A DP shooting a high budget commercial or reasonable budgeted feature with AC's and proper camera infrastructure would not shoot with internal ND's for several reasons. Internal ND's are subject to dust, made of plastic and though incredibly subtle, have been tested to have less resolution than higher quality glass filters. Also the options using a Matte Box and glass filters allow Grad's, stacking and several ND filtration options.

Bottom line, if you are asking about this question, you are fine using the internal ND's.

There's an early video where I believe Juan Martinez from Sony says they got the FS700 internal NDs from the F65. Can't imagine they put too shabby NDs in a camera of F65s price range, no?

Yeah, the first version (the FS100) didn't have the internal ND. The FS700
internal ND filters were able to be made because of developments on the F65,
at least according to Sony. As for any color shift using internal ND's I don't see it
on my FS700.....and neither do the scopes on DaVinci Resolve. Same scene is
literally the same in Resolve, regardless of ND filters being used or not, no shift
towards red, green or blue. I have done testing with several variable NDs (Heliopan,
Eclipse and so on) compared to the FS700 built in NDs and found the built in NDs
were what you want to use. If someone thinks they can see the difference, I will
be glad to post my video sample findings and see if they can guess which has internal and
and which scene (no movement, just a scenic) is controlled via shutter.
