Thumbscrew size (Tripod Quick Release Plate) for HVX

Hi,

Does anyone know what size thumbscrew I need for the HVX200 to mount the quick release tripod plate to the camera? And if I can buy it at some place like Home Depot?

1/4 inch is standard on most cameras for thread size. 20 threads per inch. (I am going off memory here, but I am pretty sure I am right) Once you go up to larger cameras (mostly 16 / S16 / 35) the screw can become larger

And yes...I replaced a screw @ home depot before. Bring the camera though. That way you can test

the word id use is MAYBE. the screw head has to be under a certain thickness or it wont fit between the head and qr plate. so bring your plate with you as well

1/4-20 is the standard screw size for most cameras, some bigger ones also have the option for a 3/8-16 screw. You'll find plenty of these type of screws at Home Depot but the flat ones used on most quick release plates i'm not so sure about. You can get them on ebay easily, just search for "tripod quick release screw"

Standard 1/4 inch 20 thread Machine srews work well. However, most are too long. You will do yourself a world of good, if you have acess to a grinder, or a buddy with one. Youll need to cut the threads down quite a bit. I've been down this road many times over the years, and when I need some, I make up a bunch of them at once because Im always losing them. Most smaller professional, pro-sumer and consumer cameras do not have a very deep thread socket for the standard 1/4 20 screws you find at the Home Center stores mentioned above. you will need to shave off some of the threading. You can also use a small hack saw, but make sure you have a 1/4 20 threader with you to clean up the end a bit. Again, youll also want to find the Machine screws, they need either a Flathead or Phillips screwdriver. Do Not get the hex bolts. They come in short sizes, but you will drive everyone nuts if someone has to remove the shoe or camera. Not to mention, most Bolts wont fit between the shoe and mounting plate. Machine Head Screws have a cone shape to end of them and will recess nicely in your shoe. You can also find screws made for this purpose on-line if you dont mind waiting, and paying several dollars each for them. Not worth it IMHO.
