FS7: Thumbnail screen only displays format you are currently shooting

Just wanted to point out a possible "gotcha" I found while reading the 120+ page manual today. Unlike the FS700 which I came from, the FS7 thumbnail screen does not display all the clips on the card, just the ones that are the same resolution, frame rate, etc. as you are currently shooting. On the 700 and most previous cameras of any make, they would be displayed but not playable until you switched formats. On the FS7, to see these clips you will need to switch back to the previous format. I can see this causing a slight panic to someone who rents the camera, shoots something in 4k, switches to 1080P, shoots a few more clips, and finds his 4K clips "missing".

That's not quite right, it displays all the clips with different resolutions and frame rates and plays them back. It's only an issue if you change the country setting. So, if you're switching between 24p and 25p for example, a 'no entry' icon appears in a blank thumbnail frame for each of the recorded shots in the wrong format.

Why in this day and age of PAL/NTSC not bloody meaning a thing in the world of HD and 4k can't we just have all the framerates available - 23.976, 25, 180fps etc, without restarting the camera and delving into menus?

Just tested and see you are correct. I based my post on the following from page 51 in the manual:

Note:

Only the clips recorded in the currently selected recording format are displayed on the thumbnail screen. If an expected recorded clip is not displayed, check the recording format. Take special note of this fact before formatting media.

So, when Sony says "format", they mean something other than resolution/frame rate?

"Format" in this case would mean NTSC or PAL.

Confusing because at the bottom of the same page, it labels all the sections of the thumbnail screen. The box where the resolution and frame rate is shown is labeled "Recording Video Format".

I think it has to do with internal sync. Though, I'd rather they called it 50Hz or 60Hz, referencing an out of date broadcast format is just plain daft. It's also annoying that to get to 180fps I have to switch to NTSC and then change base settings back to 25fps in post.

Hmmm maybe. It's not a thing on Red where you can just set whatever timebase / framerate you want. Seems like a real legacy throwback - presumably ingrained from decades of Sony selling different versions to different markets.
