Throwing this out there...

I did this on my first day with the camera. Pretty much left it on auto iris/focus (the focus part was a dumb oversight as it was 5am and I was rushing out the door for a 6am call) pointed out my window at downtown San Diego.

Overall, I like the look and I got lucky with a storm rolling through. I feel like the vid should be about 15 seconds shorter but I'm going to leave it for now.

Enjoy, and feedback is always welcome.

Oh, and I must say that I'm completely impressed with most of what I've seen/read on this site. Thanks.

Re: Throwing this out there...

Nicely done. What music did you use? I didn't think it was too long at all. In fact, I would submit it as a short film to festivals.

Re: Throwing this out there...

Nice job, Darin
Funny how something so simple can be so effective.
I love how that spectacular :o burst of light the setting sun is echoed in the raindrops on the window.
Ive never used the time-laspe function, how did you do that.(or was that done in post?) Well, keep 'em coming.

Re: Throwing this out there...

I think I have seen it 5 times in a row and I still dont got bored out of it!!
its fantastic, I love this stuff!! btw Id love to know who made that track?

Re: Throwing this out there...

I loved it (and being from San Diego remember this storm. You see guys, we have the Perfect Weather and when it does this we cry like little girls).

It is also a great example of how lighting can affect your shot. This piece moves from Blown Out Overcast to an Extreme Display of Light and Color. As the Sun moves over the horizon the clouds burst into Orange and Reds and Pinks.

Great job.

Re: Throwing this out there...

Hey guys,

I love the compliments/feedback. But at the risk of shooting myself down, there was a fair bit of beginners luck involved. The storm was a fluke, the iris was left on auto. I basically came home to a great bit of footage and added music.
I only had the camera in my hands for 7 or 8 hours.

I'll gladly accept accolades in the future when I've produced something that cool on purpose. heh heh heh

Again, thanks everyone. I'm looking forward to a long and enlightning experience with the camera, this forum, and moviemaking in general.

cool job

cool job

so can that be done in the dvx100 or is this timelapse function only available on the newer "A" models. ?

I should look into my dvx a little more deeper - maybe my ass wouldn't look so dumb right now:-[ ;)

Love that biblical vibe going on with the sun set - you should seriously consider submitting it somewhere - I have seen alot worse win prizes.

Re: Throwing this out there...

John! - I know - I keep getting sidetracked on all the other stuff - fcp - ae etc etc & even though I dip into these posts & should memorize - I only ever learn by, actualy doing it - followed by asking 'Q's & reading post's here.
I have been concerntrating heavily on the editing & trying to get up to speed on fcp so, I guess.. my camera action has been slow.
But hey your right - I should quit getting lazy & start looking up the archives - just couldn't resist the convenience of asking again :P ;D

Re: Throwing this out there...

Hi everybody,

I'm just watching what kind of picture the DVX100 or Dvx100A can do and I can't wait to just have mine.

Nice forums

Long life to DVXUSER!!! ;D ;D ;D

Re: Throwing this out there...

Nice. Good luck that that storm came through like it did. ;D

I really don't like the interval record function on the camera myself. It's not true time-lapse and it puts A LOT of hours on the heads. I did some time-lapse for last spring's Hookahville music festival in Columbus OH. 2 days of hours on my heads.

Then I discoverd iStopmotion. It's this software developed by some Europeans to do stop-motion annimation and time-lapse, with a maximum exposure of one frame every second. Just connect your DV camera via firewire to a computer. I used it for the following spec spot I did:

Here's a pic of the rig I used to put the camera on my car:

And here's another clip I used iStopmotion for. I captured about 2-2.5 hours worth in 30 seconds, about one frame every 6 seconds. This is of my friedns and I performing surgery on a recording studio:

Re: Throwing this out there...

I agree. It's not true time lapse and it does put a crazy amount of hours on your camera. I put on 19hrs total for that vid (from 5am-midnight basically) and only used a 3-4 time period for the final.

I picked up a 25ft firewire cable a few weeks back planning to go straight into my powerbook for the next one.

Thanks, and your vid is way cooler. Can I ask what compression/output settings you used?

I can't recall exactly, but I know I used the DSL/Cable High or LAN defaults in QuickTime but changed the video encoder to Sorenson 3 and adjusted the quality slider to 'best'. I may have limited the fps to 24, but can't remember. I do think a file size of 3.7 MB is kinda big for just a 30 second clip though.

I'm a camera assistant by trade, man. All this computer-genius required post production stuff can be baffling.

After reading my above post I realize it seems like I'm selling something. I'm not, I guess that's just the way it comes out...

Thanks for the kind words!

Re: Throwing this out there...

You're welcome.

Oh, cool rig for your car the way. And thanks for the software tip.

G'Night all.

Re: Throwing this out there...

Hey, this storm reminds me of where I live (Syracuse, NY) except that if you shot the same storm here, you wouldn't need time lapse. Our local joke is - hey, you don't like the weather, wait around five minutes.

I went to your links on the web. I clicked on your wedding video. Did you use a DVX100 for that?
