Throbbing WB

WTF?

I was fooling around with the cam tonight (100B), filming a cage, deathmatch between a big spider and a cricket (both about the same size) and I WBed to my cabinets (white enough) and shot away. I immediately noticed the WB throbbing between white, up to blue and down to yellow, then up and down, over and over, about, maybe 2 seconds from warm to cool, then 2 seconds back down. The WB setting was on "a" with custom WB set. It was not on a preset.

I had the cam in default F6 and it was shooting 1/250 shutter. I shut off the shutter and the throbbing stopped. Kinda annoying. I'm glad I kow how to stop that (by shutting the shutter off), but it shouldn't be doing that, should it? In the middle of production, please dont tell me the cam has to go in for repairs.

Hopefully I'm just a diptard and am overlooking something. (Well, I am a diptard, so hopefully I'm just overlooking something.)

Thanks guys,

i think you are on auto white balance.
your white balance will change according to color temperature change

There was no change go color temp, just a static macro shot. I'll check my settings when i get home. Thanks.

Were you shooting under fluorescent lighting, by any chance? That can cause the problem you're describing.

yes. could you please explain what exactly is going on? and why shutter speed would make a difference. Much appreciated.

Fluorescent lights (depending on the ballast) can have a flicker to them. Some shutter speeds won't look good under them. I'm not exactly sure of the technical reasons for this (I'm sure someone who knows more than I will chime in with a better explanation), but I've seen it happen.

so it' s possibly the WB off sync with the lights also? Reading the cool of the lights when go sync and them reading the other lighting when out of sync? Crazy stuff. I was aware that shutter flicker could happen (none here) but not WB.

Thanks,

This happened to me as well with some other cameras. I changed the shutter speed until the problem left. It was weird. Mess with the shutters if your AWB is off and see if it helps.

Funny you should mention this as i was having the same problem last night. I found out that the strobing of the tv i was using to monitor the shot was interfering with the white balancing, making it cycle through colours for no reason. Once i turned the tv off everything was fine.
