Thoughts on this look

Hey, this is a shot from my short "Repent" The short itself was done pretty quickly(about 2 days) for a college creative submission. Now as I was waiting for the final soundtrack to be done I played around a little with the look of one of the opening shots. I darkened it up and put in a new sky to add to the mood.

This is the entire shot, not just what is cut into the movie so you can disregard the random movement at the end and the lack of sound at the beginning is because this will just replace the other clip in my final timeline and the original sound will stay in place. Neither of those things really affect the shot as you will be able to see the "look" I was going for, just didnt want you to all think I'm too much of an idiot

Anyways, let me know what you think

Wow that looked like CGI to me, but yes - I like the look - but without knowing the exact story or feeling of the short it could be as out of place as Jesus Christ at a ... well I don't know contrasting things but whatever

Anywho - it kinda reminded me somewhat of the Dawn of the Dead *(2004) Color correction, but with more purple/blue than greenish/yellow

Thanks for the quick reply, you are the second person to say it looked like it was computer generated...wierd...o well. I think it fits the mood and story pretty well so hopefully people will overlook that.

Anyways I'm really liking the new features of Vegas 6 which i just got(and used on this). The new masking stuff is really helpfull.

Whats everyone else think?

i wish someone could show me how to do composites...

I kinda just figured it out on my own. Depending on what you use to edit its just a matter of playing around untill it looks good. If you use vegas I could probably give you a couple of hints to start you off.

and did anyone else look at this? thoughts?

I think it looks pretty good. The sky seems to fit the coloration that you gave to the footage. What I don't understand is the odd "trail" or "ghost" effect on the guy running. It's most apparent at around the 12 second mark. Maybe I'm just missing something from your initial post. Is that intentional?

I didnt really notice the ghosting that you talked about although now i can see it. Thats not part of the effect and when i get a chance im going to look at the full res version to see if its there and noticable. Hopefully if it is, I can fix it.

Hopefully it won't. It may just have something to do with the compression. I've noticed that WMV is particularly bad with motion blur, especially in 24p. It may just be that I've not taken the time to learn how to fix that, but using any sort of presets I've always had bad motion blur on WMVs. Anyway, as I said before I liked the look and I also liked the smooth pedestal-up movement you used. Really added a nice feel to the shot.

I really like the look as well, however in the footage I'm looking at (perhaps just my computer), there is a dark shadow like effect on that house (over the doorway) that seems out of place and seems to move with the camera?

Thanks for looking guys.

Shawn, that is a product of my inexperience with compositing, I tried to minimize it and I felt it wasnt that noticable where its at. I'm hoping people wont be too distracted by it and in the future hopefully in the future ill figure out how to do cleaner looking composites

Hey, as long as you're aware of it and it's just a matter of experience then the gist of what you're doing looks really good! Thanks for putting it out there for us to see.

Very nice. I particularly liked the low to the ground shots. And that wide angle of the guy walking along in front of the wall/building. I agree with Marlene: you broke the rules in all the right way. Loved the spontaneity of the eratic rack-focusing.

Yea this somehow got bumped, I had posted it a long time ago and since removed the file. You can check out the whole short which this is from at http://www.dvxuser.com/V3/showthread.php?t=43937

I'd love it if you let me know what you think. This particular shot is the one of the kid running away in the beginning...its a crane shot and he is running towards the camera.
