this or fcp?

They are two different beasts so its not actually a choice between one or the other.

(Its one , either or both depending on what you want to do)

As shooter said two very different programs that you really can't compare one is a NLE and the other AE is a compositing program.

I think motion comes with FCP studio which is a similar app to AE. Depends on teh budget and what you want to do. Ideally you would want a NLE and a composting program.

FCP is for editing
AE is for composites and effects

If you have nothing, I recommend IMHO, FCP Studio because it has Motion, Soundtrack Pro, Color, DVD Studio, and so on. Then get AE when you can afford it.

I went the other way... I got AE, and then FC Express... FCE has limited capability relative to various codecs, but since my primary camera is a DVX 100 A, all of my video editing is in SD, so no problem there...

AE is a pain for 'audio' editing, so again FCE and using Soundtrack (non Pro version)... unfortunately version 4 of FCE cut Soundtrack and the export capability...

As it is I've upgraded my AE to the full CS3 Production Pro... not that I had absolute need to get Primiere, but the bundle did give me the latest AE, and includes Adobe's sound program, as well as the DVD-BluRay softare 'encore'.

What is really interesting about Encore... is it did not support HD DVD... just BluRay... did Adobe 'know something'???

If i only have to use one program it would be AE. It does everything. and yes you can EVEN edit videos. Its not the best for video editing but you certainly can set in and out points on video clips.

It would be a very slow and tedious process using AEFX as an Editor so I must disagree with Barnapkins.

The lesser but still formidable compositing power of FCP (or Premiere) combined with true editing functions makes either of these the far better choice if you only had one application.

But the again ....it comes down to what the OP is requiring for his/her purpose. (Considering that he/she did not know the difference, I would think that it might not be AEFX)

sure you can, you just have to be creative about it.

But for some set of things... $300 (or so) for FC Express removed the need to be 'creative' on the splicing and dicing of standard video... So I can do video editing easier in FCE, then export to something that is 'easy' for AE to process, as needed.

Well, except for editing in 24p. :)

Yes, well, I think it is obvious that at some point someone will eventually break down and purchase the more powerful package...

And you can 'edit' 24p in FC Express, so long as you don't think about it being 24p... If you really do want to work at 23.97, well, shell out $1300 US... and get the FCP studio package, and like the ginzu knife commericial... what's more you get not only FCP, but all the other fancy tools...

I sort of went the other way, because I wanted to upgrade my AfterEffects to CS3, and I also wanted to update my Flash to CS3... so I got the whole magilla with the Adobe package... so Primiere Pro does do the 'right' thing with the 24p and 24pa of the DVX. (As did AE 7...). I've not done too much with the Primiere portion... but it's there...

If you had to choose between AE and FCP Studio I'd recommend FCP.

I use both extensively and for high-end work.

AE is great for compositing. Combined with Primatte, it's an amazingly powerful green screen tool.

But AE is absolutely terrible for getting a sense of timing because the user interface is not optimal for judging real-time edits with audio elements.

FCP is weaker when it comes to getting really clean results for scaling images, composites, keys, etc. But it's a great editor which is what it's designed for.

And there's an entire suite of other tools including Soundtrack Pro, LiveType, Motion and -- my new favorite -- Color.

So if you intend to edit, get FCP first!

When you're ready to do sophisticated composites, get AE. But be ready to also spend on Primatte and Silhouette Roto.

Silhouette has great roto tools but it also has a much better tracker than AE. Worth the money!
